Tamamo no Mae is one of the Nihon san dai aku yōkai (Three Great Evil Yōkai of Japan). Yokai are a particular united group of Fae that have rejected the Spring and Summer Courts, and are notable for congregating throughout Japan. Tamamo no Mae's nefarious deeds stretch back millennia. In her earliest known incarnation, she assumed the guise of Daji, a bewitching concubine who ensnared the heart of King Zhou of the Shang Dynasty. Under her malevolent influence, the once-great kingdom descended into a maelstrom of debauchery and depravity, hastening its inevitable downfall.

Throughout the ages, she traversed continents and epochs, adopting new identities and sowing discord wherever she tread. As Lady Kayō in the kingdom of Magadha, she manipulated King Kalmashapada into committing unspeakable atrocities, plunging the land into darkness and despair. In the courts of ancient China, she reigned as Bao Si, a queen whose icy beauty masked a heart as cold and cruel as winter's chill.

But it was in Japan, during the Heian period, that Tamamo no Mae's legend reached its zenith of infamy. Disguised as the enchanting maiden Mikuzume, she insinuated herself into the imperial court, her beauty and intellect captivating all who beheld her. As the favored consort of Emperor Toba, she wielded her influence like a dagger, her whispered words poisoning the minds of kings and nobles alike.

Yet, her reign of terror was not to last. When the court astrologer Abe no Yasunari uncovered her true nature, the emperor's trust turned to suspicion, and suspicion to fear. Forced to flee, Tamamo no Mae's flight from justice led her to the plains of Nasu, where she met her final reckoning at the hands of Kazusanosuke and Miuranosuke, two valiant warriors and mages tasked with her destruction. It is said that Miuranosuke fired two arrows, one through the fox’s flank and one through its neck. While Kazusanosuke swung his blade, slaying the nine tailed fox once and for all.

Of course, the fae have a complicated relationship with the concept of death, and Tamamo no Mae would not stay dead for long. In the modern day, Tamamo no Mae is a harbinger of calamity. Appearing in the mundane world just before times of great suffering and strife, sometimes to witness them, other times to make them worse, all for her own amusement.
