Description My dreads were circa nov 2001 - nov 2002, so this was taken at some point during that school year. Art class, grade 12.

AS MUCH AS I LOVE RANTING ABOUT DREADS, please read the comments if you are looking for some suggestions, cause i can only repeat myself so many times!

SUGGESTIONS:
1. Check out dread sites. See what people with your type of hair say about their dreads. When in doubt: thin hair = bad, thick hair = good. Straight hair = not so great, curly hair = really great.
2. Go easy on the wax.
3. Yes, you CAN wash your dreads. Don't condition them.
4. No, I did not shave my head.
5. Why yes, I DID comb my dreads out. Ample amount of conditioner + a weekend + maybe more than one comb = no more dreads.

I HOPE THIS DOESNT SOUND WEIRD BUT YOU ARE SERIOUS THE FEMALE VERSION (Physically) OF MY CHARACTER PAUL.

And on that side note, wonderful picture <3

Why thank you! If this Paul character is anything like myself in ten years, he will have resumed his natural curly/wavy hair (just as longas ever) and still prefers wearing glasses. Hahah

i have dreadlocks myself, but at the moment i'm thinking of combing them out or cutting them off, because i am going to university soon. sadly there are many
people with prejudices and this might be a hindrance for my high ambitions...

You said that you can wash your hair. but can you wash your hair during the first few months while the bees wax is still lockin in?

Asrath In reply to TheArtBardSodo [2012-05-04 17:31:28 +0000 UTC]

Yes, yes, you can easily wash your hair during the first months. I washed mine the fifth day (which is today actually, hurray!)and they are totally fine.
And about the bees wax; I suggest you to get it out! Since it hinders the locking process more than helping, and it can also cause mildew growth.

Oh wait, I see this comment is almost a year old... sorry. I guess you've already done something by now, lol!

Did you do your dreads yourself when you had them? Or did you get them done professionally?

I really want them but I want to be able to get them out when Iv had enough. I have thick, frizzy hair and cant really do anything with it so this seems like a cool idea.

Neither! hahah. My sister did them for me.

*also has thick frizzy hair!* I think dreads are an excellent option! Although this summer I really just let my hair down if you know what i mean. I was so tired of fighting against my hair's natural type. I let them be all wild and frizzy and wavy-curly. People seemed to really love it!

Your dreadlocks look beautiful and fitting on you. It is a shame you had gotten rid of them long ago. Oh well. Good you had them once and done it so well then.

Why did you comb them out tho? :0

beatnik In reply to OS9 [2011-10-10 02:08:36 +0000 UTC]

Thank you!

I didn't take very good care of them, leaving them in ponytails put weird kinks in them. Plus my hair has natural large waves, so if I washed them, sometimes the natural wave would create a kink in the hair. And at that point in my life I think I just needed a change.,

Yeah, I remember I did that too when I grew tired of mine. They weren't well done so I decided after a month to comb them out and cutt my hair, cus' it was sure as hell not getting better. I'll make my next ones on a salone if I'm a good girl and actually try to save some money for once XDD

beatnik In reply to Bloody-Chicken [2011-02-08 07:20:56 +0000 UTC]

Thank you!

It's been so long since I've had them (ten years... good grief, has it really been that long!?) that I think all my old advice in the comments section are better than I could explain now.

Check out some dread sites to see what people with your hair type say about their dreads. Mostly what I remember reading is the thicker/curlier your hair, the better the dreads. My hair is really wavy so my dreads always got weird kinks in them after I washed them, and the ends would curl haha... definitely interesting times.

If you decide to get dreads, don't overdo the hair products (dreadwax is nice and all... but you wouldn't believe the gunk I combed out when I combed my dreads out... flammable, much?). Also try not to tie the dreads back too often... bad kinks happen. And palmroll them as often as possible to maintain a nice shape.

They won't look good for about a month, afterwards they sshould tame down nicely. The best looking dreads are the part that starts growing after you lock up your hair.

Some hair never really looks good with dreads no matter how old the dreads are. I think a big part of it is maintenance. I failed at it so I combed out my dreads.

People who've never had dreads always ask me, "so did you have to shave your head?" No. I don't have thick curly hair, I have wavy regular hair. So I combed them out starting at the tips. I would recommend using conditioner to soften the tanglies. If you decide you don't want them anymore, this is definitely an option, just set aside a whole weekend or something! Also my hair WAS kind of ruined... it was all frizzy and breaky looking. But a good haircut would fix that.

You're very welcome
Wow, 10 years!
Yeah, I've read about that and unfortunately my hair is scarily straight - I've never had to bother with straighteners, however it is thick
I also want them as natural as possible. The only thing I've put in them at the moment was hairspray ... But that was accidental
But awesome, thank you so much for the great advice!

beatnik In reply to Bloody-Chicken [2011-02-08 17:17:18 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I'm an ole lady.
I don't think straight is such a bad thing though, you'll avoid the kinks I had! Might take a bit more effort to get the new dreads to lock up as your hair grows... maybe. I don't know for sure.
But you HAVE dreads? Awesome!

Wow! Those look awesome! I've always considered dreads but i have extremely thin hair. Can you reccomend a website? i've found a crap load, but idk if there any good.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

beatnik In reply to tattoofuzzy [2008-10-26 20:20:48 +0000 UTC]

It's been years since I've looked at any websites, so I can't really recommend any anymore. Thinner hair is much harder to keep in dreadlocks, but I've heard that rinsing your hair in saltwater (or swimming in it, for that matter) helps thin hair to cling together. The micro salts create tiny cuts in your hair) I've never really recommended products that make your hair feel dirty, such as dreadwax (smells lovely, but feels and looks sticky).

If your hair is thin but maintains its strength, you shouldn't have too much of a problem. Keep in mind your dreads will never look as full as people who have thick hair. If your hair breaks easy, you might have a problem just keeping them to stay together. And if your hair is already sort of short, you should just go for it! It wouldn't take that long for your hair to grow back to its original length if you have to get rid of your dreads.

I know it's hard when there are a lot of things to consider. It's mostly just that if you think your hair can withstand the trauma.

tattoofuzzy In reply to beatnik [2008-10-27 03:21:32 +0000 UTC]

If i can get a bunch of fairly thin dreads I'll be happy. But i think its not as strong as i want it to be.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

beatnik In reply to tattoofuzzy [2008-10-28 04:38:39 +0000 UTC]

That's unfortunate. My hair never did what I wanted it to do either. It's really tough. Good luck with your dreads!
