It's highly likely that this concept has already been done at least once over the last 3 years MLP:FiM was a thing, and if not I'm just too darn lazy to check anyways. I know this is an old comic, but this has me wondering.
I know Applejack is most likely named after the drink rather than an apple, but maybe she inherited all the orange from her aunt and uncle Orange? And only took on the name Applejack after realizing her talent for apples? Or something like that. Dunno how to describe my logic, but basically; Orange before, Apple after.

there are no orange colored apples. applejack, the delicious and extremely alcoholic apple based whiskey she is named after, however, IS orange colored. boom problem solved.

Blenheim Orange, Bismarck, and a few other apple cultivars are orange coloured. Plus, the drink itself, Applejack, varies in color from a light orange much like AJ's coat to a ruddy brown.

(Babs could be rotten apple (BAD Seed) and there is another orange pony who could be fromΒ Cox Orange Pippin Apples and if its not the relation for AJ then its the Cox Orange Pippin Apple too)
