Description This is Nefris, a mummy character of mine who's lover (deceased) was a priest of Anubis.

This is a new style and technique for me. I was trying to emulate Erte', a fashion and graphic designer from the 20's and 30's. This was a time when Art Deco was all the rage.

Erte's style was very flat with the barest of shading. He used mostly lines and shapes to convey depth. His backgrounds were mostly non-existent, but sometimes he added a design element or two. His subjects were long and lean, much like the skinny flapper girls that were in vogue at the time.

Despite the fact that it looks simple, it actually took me forever to do this piece! I'm not even sure if I'm happy with it. It sucks compared to Erte's real work, imo. I think I added too much shading, as a matter of fact. Bleh.

I want to know what you guys think. I could use a critique, but I wanted you to be somewhat familiar with Erte's style before you offered your thoughts on the piece.

Thanks all! : )

Funny really that you should mix the Art Deco style with ancient Egypt, because that's exactly what inspired art deco in the first place but then you probably knew that already. Reminds me of an idea for a 'Maat Flapper' picture I have in mind, but a lot more sinister and mummy-ish. I like it!

The Egypt was all the "rage" in the late 20's, early 20's.

Nice piece. I am not familiar with the artist that you mentioned, but I think that your approach totally works. More stylized than an attempt at realism, it's absolutely gorgeous. I liked your decision to go with black bandages and white clothing. Very nice. Gonna fave it.

the detail you put in this piece is really phenominal. The porspect is really interesting and the black an white really contrast with each other. But they work together perfectly. The clothes are also another eye catcher, the detail is so beautiful!

I also have my eye on that little jackal there, it looks stunning and i love the simplicity in it!

Well, I don't know much about art deco in terms of figures, but the flowers are certainly very reminiscent of that style - good job! *looks at some Erte* Oh yeah, I can really see the similarity, both in the style and the use of draping fabric. I haven't really seen one that makes use of the smooth shading you've applied to the white parts of her garment - as you've picked up in the rest of your piece, there's a great use of flat colours - but that's not to say it doesn't improve your image. ^_^ I would say you've captured the Erte look, though.

I really like this. It's rather creepy and beautiful at the same time. You've really gone the whole hog with the Ancient Egyptian adornment, and it works brilliantly. I particularly like the texture of her headdress. That's a perfect jackal, too. Really good work - well done!
