Description

The Mountain hare's (Lepus timidus) name is slightly misleading. While the species does live in certain mountain areas, such as the Alps, it is primarily a northern hare - and spread from Scandinavia all the way to Siberia. This also makes them one of the hare species which turns white in the winter (almost - they keep their black ear tips), while being a greyish brown in the summer - which can be seen in the drawing, where some of the summer coat still remains. That said, they are also known as tundra hare, variable hare, white hare, snow hare, alpine hare and - the Irish subspecies - Irish hare.

The species is hunted as game, and in some areas it faces competition from the larger European hare, but it is still very widespread and common, and is considered Least Concern.

This is my local hare species, so I've seen them in the wild a couple of times - and I see tracks pretty often, at least in the snow. Considering I have an exhibition coming up I thought it was a good compromise between a locally known species and an overall more unknown one.

The photo doesn't quite do the piece justice, however, as there are small color gradients which weren't picked up. I also had to rush the piece to meet the deadline, so it is what it is.
