I still think that the legendaries look like Digimon and the starters like Yokai tbh

That's true, I think the legendaries are very over-done.
The lion is pretty uninspired generally, but has a pretty good design and looks pretty awesome, so it's purpose is fulfilled.
The moon bat is creative and an cool concept, but horribly over-developed and busy and awkward.Β
Both of them having a white base really does not help. Legendaries have never really tied in with each other, besides theme and maybe structure (Lugia and Ho-oh, Zekrom and Reshiram) Making their color scheme sorta the same looks like a lazy and pretty terrible attempt at trying to make them look like they're somehow related.
Personally, I love the starters. At the current standard I have for pokemon designs, as long as none of them end up shitty furries, I'm a-okay.
