I was bored, so I decided to try out this tutorial [link] Oy vey I fail. I think I'm too anal retentive for something as loose and free-flowing as watercolor. I've got to stay in the LINES!!! Anyway, so yes, this is my first attempt at trying the make a watercolor affect on Photoshop. I'm not at all happy with this, but I figured that since I haven't posted in forever, I thought I'd post this so everyone could laugh with me at my poor attempt at doing something cool
This had a background... but... yeah....... the less said about it the better. Don't ask me why the Kuchiki's, I'm as surprised as you are! First time drawing Byakuya in earnest, second time with Rukia (or Hisana I guess, they look freakin' nearly identical), so both are reference-tastic. And yes, I once again declined putting them in Shinigami wear. I wanted to have some color! Weeeee! No hair curlers for Byakuya today either! MWAHAHAHA!!!! 
So in closing, hopefully this will motivate me to draw something better to get this off the front page. This may be scrapped later... we shall seeeeee.........Please fullview, the thumbnail makes me cry

...except to say that I like the calm vibe of this--Rukia looks resigned and sad but wise, and Byakuya looks determined and also wise... maybe wise is the wrong word, but they both have this 'knowing' sort of feeling to them... maybe that's due to the softness of the watercolors... dot dot dot... (I'm overusing ellipses, I know.)
Oh, and Byakuya's frickin' sexy with his hair down.

I like their bright, bright eyes and the shiny hair and the gradient shading--it looks really cool! I will say that it doesn't have that watercolor feel to it, though, the free, wispy sort of look that is the patented watercolor ... type .... thing. Yeah, not doin' so well with the words tonight. Anyway--yeah, I agree that watercolor has to ignore the lines and rebel against their crisp authority in an epic battle for the ages.
Um... I have no idea what I'm saying, so don't hold any of that against me when I'm more awake, yeah?

Perhaps I will try it, I really like that free-flowing watercolor look and always envy people who can do it.... I bet I'm not going to be good at it, either. I'm not good at making free-flowing looking things, I carefully control every line/mark in my drawings and it shows. Especially when I'm trying to make it look spontaneous and wispy. But I shall give it a whirl!

Yeah, I totally fail at the whole wispy free thing. Sadness. Oh well, I tried, and twas fun. You should try that tutorial. It's tougher than you'd think, or at least it was for me... I'm just too anal retentive.
The conversation was epic indeed. After we hung up Saldir sang his "My batteries are dead" swan song and died. And verily I plugged him in, and now he LIVES!!!! MWAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!

I think that it turned out lovely. Might have had a more watercolor-ey effect if there was a little color outside the lines? I dunno, just a thought.

I think this looks lovely, even if the skin tones look a bit too dark to me. But kudos to you for trying something so different. I know I couldn't do without my crisp lines

nice just practice your own style and youll get their and lines are nothing lines are just placed to creat the image we see

Yeah. I agree it's tough to do water color because like you said you have to be free and just let it go the way it wants...it's supposed to go outside of the lines it's supposed to be blury and soft...ARGH!!!! I can't do it!
Anyway, I think you did a good job with this though. I love the colors!

Oh and I really like the way you shaded the faces. They look natural. It's good!
The one thing I think that might help to make it look more..."water-colory" is if you made their cloaks/shirts/thingies multicolored. I mean if instead of just being one shade of purple maybe it could be multiple shades of purple...you know what I mean? Like how when Cass did that little water color of a "Clicky Dude" it was two tones of green. That way it would look like their shirt thingies were just sloppily colored...you know sloppy like an artist who doesn't give a shit for lines and perfection and just owns the shirt being sloppily colored.
I know you like criticism so I've given a bit...that doesn't mean I don't love this picture though. like I said I think you did a wonderful job coloring their faces. The shading is perfect. I also love Rukia's hair. Again the shading is really when done. Good Job!!!
Oh, and POST MORE OFTEN YOU LAZY PERSON YOU!!!!!!! Don't you know I live for your deviations?!?!?!?!?!?!
