Description
When we were little, Makoto had two pet goldfish. They were given to him by an old fisherman whom he befriended.

One summer, Makoto lost this friend due to a big storm that sank the fisherman’s boat. Some time after, Makoto found his goldfish lifeless in their bowl despite his best efforts.

This probably hit him harder than it would others because of his role as an eldest brother, and as someone who is used to taking care of other people — myself included.

We’re in high school now, but he still makes time to put out flowers for the grave he made for his goldfish.

Makoto smiles for everyone and is always ready to lend a hand, but-

Even though he wouldn’t ask for it, I’m certain he needs someone to support him too sometimes.

I’m sorry, Makoto.

I’m not good with words, but I hope I can make you understand that you don’t have to handle everything alone.

For these pictures, we touch on the darker and sadder side of our beloved swimming anime. I was pleasantly surprised to find out that there actually is more to it than the fanservice (and even that was handled in a humorous, sometimes almost satirical way). Apart from the great humor and beautiful animation, this anime had an unexpected amount of heart; something that my friends and I really came to love about it. We started watching because we thought we'd just laugh over the gratuitous fanservice, but we ended up having our hearts stolen by these endearing characters, and the strong messages on friendship which made us appreciate our own bonds more.

Free! Iwatobi Swim Club cosplay shoot outtakes!When my friends and I first heard of "that swimming anime" called Free!, this is pretty much what we expected:
Not that there's anything wrong with that hahah, but all we were expecting was to be able to laugh at how exploitable and full of fanservice this show could be because swimming would require everyone to be half-naked. Although it started out that way, the more episodes we watched, the more we realized...
We were wrong. So wrong.
What we got was a heartwarming coming-of-age story with endearing characters and interesting dynamics. It spoke of friendship and learning your self-worth and figuring out what drives you forward.
I'd write more about how I feel about it but it would take up too much time and space over here, so here are a couple of posts that have already done the job well:
