Description This frost covered Magpie searched among the deer turds trying to find any little tidbits that fell when the deer would quickly gork down the small bits of feed I put out for them. I didn't realize that a bird would frost up like this but I guess it is to be expected at -34*C

I know, I keep hoping to get my own photo so I can have a magpie instead of a crow for an icon!

yup .... been a bit of a cold winter alright. I think we are sort of spoiled with all the mild winters before this. But this is what I remember when I was a kid ..... always freaking cold!

What instantly amazes me is the direction and orientation of the bird's head... it's staring right at me. The feathers are gently sprayed with airy haze and you've also got a lovely textured snowy ground with tree droppings. For such a shot requires patience and skill, and to produce such clarity again is unbelievable.

I've never seen frost on a bird, is it still so cold over there? Here it's cold again, too, but at least, we had about 6 weeks respite after the very hard December.

yup ... it is ... we had a couple days of +8*C which melted a bit of snow but then it plummeted right back down into the -30's and everything turned to an icy mess! It was constant cold like this here when I was a kid (probably a bit colder actually) but we haven't seen it this cold for such a steady time like this for years. And it NEVER went to +8*C in the middle of winter when I was a kid .... EVER!

Why aren't you seeing them anymore?

I lived in Calgary for a year. Magpies stop on the boarders of Ontario and Manitoba. The magpies barely touch Ontario, we have lots of sea gulls, crows, ravens and bluejays here lol. I am in Nova Scotia which is where I am from.

Haha hard to say, where are you located?

Behrfeet In reply to mialythila [2011-02-22 13:26:56 +0000 UTC]

in Sask .... just north of Moose Jaw. If you are curious you can type in North Grove, Saskatchewan, Canada in Google maps and it will put the little flag almost exactly where my house is on this lake.

Where in NS are you?

lol .... I noticed you said "from" .... there seems to be a LOT of people that are "from Sask" ..... as in previously lived here and not so many that still do So where exactly in Sask was yer Ma's best friend from? :]

IC ... work related or school related or just exploring that got you to Alta and now to Halifax? I've never been east of Montreal in Canada but apparently I have a number of distant relatives on my mother's side in NS so she has been there a few times. She loved it and would love to go back again but she is getting too old to travel these days.

Well her mother I think grew up around Loon Lake or something I don't QUITE remeber I just know she was from Sask

My friend (the same one who's mom was from Sask) was living out in Alberta and offered to pay my way to go to Calgary with her and so I took the opportunity. It was kinda neat living some place different, but then I got sad lol and poor so I had to head back to NS so that I could not be living so far away with no one around.

Usually the second they see ANY movement they are gone but this one didn't seem to notice me for some reason ... sort of usual but I took full advantage!

Thanks! :]
