The Doctor sighed, his hearts breaking. Why did they always leave? Was it his fault?
The TARDIS hummed reassuringly, but he was in no mood to be comforted. He could have done so much more, he though, kicking the side of the console; the TARDIS grumbled indignantly.
He ran his fingers lightly over the TARDIS' many buttons, apologizing. It wasn't her fault that he couldn't take proper care of his friends. It was his fault. All his fault!
He sighed heavily, so tired of it all, and pushed down resolutely on the "random" button. He didn't care where he went, as long as it was away from here, as long as it was somewhere he could lose himself in. He would let the TARDIS decide; it always knew where he would be needed.
And what he needed himself.
The chaotic whooshing finally ended, and the Doctor stuck his head curiously out the door. He wasn't quite sure where he was, except that it was most definitely the planet Earth. His ship had landed at the top of a hill in the middle of a suburban neighborhood; nothing seemed to be extremely out of the ordinary, except for one thing. A girl. Sitting alone. Under a tree.
And a storm was brewing.
