Description When the original artwork for ceremonial gown was designed for Princess Leia was commissioned in 1976, there was one very noteworthy feature. For all the gown was formal, and the character would be running around starships and exotic planets, the character was designed to be purposely barefoot

As you see the first concept was retained for the first posters and a number of subsequent figurines drawn from the original design.

I have always been intrigued by the concept, which was obvioulsy the result of a lot of thought. I liked the idea that in a distance, more evloved galaxy, it was perhaps accepted that for a powerful woman to look her best she should proudly show off her feet, perhaps it was a tradition, or perhaps she was rushed into the action without the time to put on boots

In the end I decided it was probably just a strange alien world tradition that just made the costune more exciting a different

Whilst dropped for the live action film, I always thought it was a shame it wanst retained just to add the mystery to the character, her background and the traditions of far off worlds

Over my next few posts I have tried to recreate how that would have worked and been explained in the noverlisation.
