Description Finally done. Burned myself out a bit getting this done. Gonna take it easy this evening I think.

This has got a 90's American sci-fi vibe, which is a very cool thing. Nice work.

Oh, thank you very much. I'm not sure if I had any 90s influences in mind when I drew it. I was actually partially inspired by a Japanese artist I read about.

Out of curiosity, what seems reminiscent of 90s sci-fi to you?

The big external pipes, large vents, tv shapes, odd colors, and dish on the artifact. Oh and the color, that dark gray color.

What is the story behind it? What happened to the city?

Funnily enough, for once there isn't a back story here. The idea just popped into my mind and I painted it. I guess it's more supposed to be evocative than to tell a specific story. I knew the monitor designs would give it a retro feel, they just feel so much more iconic than flat-screens.

Guess a lot of modern Sci-fi makes everything look like an iPod, so anything where the guts of the tech are on display has an old-school feel to it.

Oh they definitely are a better choice than flatscreens.

I don't like modern sci-fi at all, my favorite is 90's where a lot of movies made their sci-fi really gritty. I don't know the specific term for it ... but I don't like "iPod scifi" where everything is soft, rotund, and white.

For example, "Pandorum" is a good example of what I love in sci-fi, if you've seen it. There's tons of other films but that one has been prominent in my mind for a long time now.

Yeah I like the used-future look that started in the late 70s. I'm okay with iPod tech, if it serves to contrast with other environments, like, to denote how much more advanced or more prosperous a certain location is, but it probably shouldn't dominate an entire setting.

I guess Elysium does that, but I've heard it's kinda preachy, and that turns me off from seeing it a bit.

Haven't seen Pandorum though.

OHHHHHHH "Elysium" was so good! SOOOO good.

I expected it to be nothing but action and kind of ... idk, shallow.

I get where someone might think it's preachy, it gets into the "oh noooo the white patriarchy is gonna fuck everyone over and bail while the third world BECOMES the world!" but it's not a future I CAN'T see, which made it really enjoyable for me.
