Description Anhanguera santanae. Painting time...probably around 15-20 hours. The first big art project that I've actually pulled off in a long time.

I wrote a nice long essay about painting it, to. I bared my soul. I shared my quiet triumphs and inner pain. You would have wept to see it.

Then Deviant Art blinked out and I lost the whole damn thing.

And nobody reads what I write in the Artist's Comments section, anyway.

So yeah. New paleograph. Hopefully the first of several, if I managed to get the right part of my brain turned on.

Tell me if you like it, tell me if you don't like it.

Painted while listening to:
Yume Juu Ya
Yabu no Naku
Animal Farm
Changelings: The Twins of Peteybe (stupid book)

Very nice work! The coloration of the beak reminds me of the Keel Billed Toucan.

sweet . That fur must have been painful to do- did you draw it all by hand or use brushes?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

bensen-daniel In reply to TypoCity [2009-03-12 12:29:36 +0000 UTC]

I drew it with pencil, but all of the texture and color is from photoshop

Thanks a lot. There were...problems with the texturing. You can see I changed techniques as I worked my way down the body. Plus the fuzz texture I ended up with was sort of "wet dog" as opposed to the bristly fuzz that would probably be more accurate. But I didn't know how to make bristly fuzz.

I think the wet fur is so so applicable ... it really works to give a solid impression of its lifestyle. Plus, the combined fur textures give it a very intuitive 'drying off' look

They certainly are weird looking. If I was braver, I would show it using that beak for something

I love the position you drew it in, 3/4 from the back, I can only draw flying reptiles from the side. Thier ornate heads get me confused with perspective

thanks for the fav! But see how I made this guy turn his head so it was more side-on? That makes things easier.

Thanks. I've used this color scheme for every A. santanae I've drawn. It's based on a king eider.

Well, like I said, I don't really intend to do another critter with such fiddly detail for a while. This damn thing nearly gave me carpal tunnel. Plus it took freaking forever.

Thanks a bunch. Glad to hear it about the wing membranes. I could have followed through better with the shading and texture on them, but at that point I wanted to be done with the damn thing.

bensen-daniel In reply to Piatnitskysaurus [2007-04-26 13:55:15 +0000 UTC]

Yes. This thing is wacom-driven photoshop over a pencil sketch.

It's great to see you tackle digital media head on, it'd be maddening painting such fine detail with actual pains.

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

bensen-daniel In reply to Piatnitskysaurus [2007-04-27 14:43:47 +0000 UTC]

yeah, but I still would probably have done a better job with it. I realize that a lot of the time I turn and move the paper around under my pencil or brush when I work in real life. I can't do that with the tablet, though, and as a result, my lines aren't as good.

jconway In reply to bensen-daniel [2007-05-14 12:17:41 +0000 UTC]

Corel Painter lets you do that -- including the cut-down versions you used to get for free with wacoms.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

bensen-daniel In reply to jconway [2007-05-14 19:28:28 +0000 UTC]

Really? How is Corel Painter to use?
And how would it know which direction I've turned the wacom tablet?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

jconway In reply to bensen-daniel [2007-05-14 19:36:32 +0000 UTC]

Painter's pretty good for natural brushes and textures, much better than photoshop. It got a reputation for having a bit of a messy interface, but I've found it easy enough. And you turn the picture on the screen -- it's the same effect.

At the very least, I read the comments section. (sometimes before looking at the image itself)

and congratulations on the picture. a very photogenic creature. (and if its not, even more praise that you got it to look photogenic for you)

have nice days, my friend.

Anhanguera is a photogenic creature. In fact (as I said in that long ago lost comment) Anhanguera has become sort of a talisman for me. It was a head shot of an Anhanguera that was my first picture to make it onto the Dinosauricon. Then it was two Anahanguera flying that allowed me (with the assistance of HP Conway and a dose of hallucinogenic Furi-Kuri) that broke the dry spell brought on by college. I had a similar catharsis when I decided to finish this paleograph. Here's hoping its a sign of what's to come.

_another_ talisman? Do I have more than one?

(let's see, I guess my personal talismans would be Anhanguera, the bear (my male-line family's Norwegian totem), and the walkman and book (with which I slay the demons of boredom).
