Description Prompt 2 of the 100 Dragons Challenge was: Battle-Scarred Sea Dragon- I was too late completing this again because my brain insists on creating full body designs and lore and backstory with any creature design.  This design is probably pushing what can be defined as a "dragon." It could likely get away with that title in Monster Hunter, but not in classic dragon design XD

Anyway, unnecessary backstory! I want to shoot for unconventional/unexpected concepts in this challenge, which is what eventually led to this whale-beast-thing.  The obvious route seemed to be a form of sea monster, emphasis on monster- acting as some kind of horrible legend that attacks ships and humans and its scars are the result of battling with humans on ships.  I decided to go for a different reason for scarring- the scars on this creature are all from other sea creatures, not humans.

The "dragon" here doesn't attack ships or is even territorial and plays no role in human legends- hell, most humans don't know they exist. This creature has taken on the role of a guardian, protecting those in most need of protection. This mantle has been passed down through many generations and each guardian is a little different from the last. They usually take on sea turtles or whales as the wards, ferrying them through the oceans at their vulnerable states as they journey to lay eggs or give birth.  Most guardians never reach this size- in this world, many other gigantic creatures already exist, creatures bigger than the largest whales and will target them as prey.  Most guardians die while protecting their wards while they themselves are not much larger than the whales themselves.  This guardian has managed to attain a massive size, though it was hard-won.  Coated in scars from everything to sharks to krakens with one flipper torn off, they've survived and are now so large that they're rarely challenged- even if they are, their size makes it much easier to get rid of threats, regardless of their injuries.
