And to round off the whales, one from the past, and the two largest Merfolk of 'em all!

Copied straight from my reddit.
-------
Balian the Wordsmith: A Basilosaurus merman, and arguably responsible for a huge part of modern Merwhale culture (and by extension, Merfolk culture in general). While many of his works are now shattered ruins, he was SUCH an extensive writer, that he maintained a Syllabary that had copies from one corner of Urvara to another, and can be pieced together by the hard work of multiple communities working together to form this masterpiece. It is through him that the language of Merwhale-kind can be written and read, and through his records that give perhaps the most detailed vision of just what the Primeval Age was like. Unfortunately, according to one broken tablet… he may have run afoul of that most dreaded of beings… the Sea Lord.

The Grand Blue Twins: The biggest Merfolk to have ever lived, as they’re big even by the standards of their fellow Blue Whale merfolk compatriots, they dwarf literally everyone, and not even beings from the Primeval Age can compare to just how massive they are.

That is where most of the similarities ends, as their paths in lives couldn’t be any more different:
  • Ataahua: A well known healer, and Alva’s chief apprentice, offering a helping hand to any community that needs her, just like her mentor… If a bit TOO helpful for her own good, for she would even save stranded or drowning Landlubbers as well. Tales of a giant blue woman-whale are becoming more frequently heard among many port-towns, though those that tell these stories are usually dismissed as crazies. Still, many Merfolk are very irate about this, but there’s not much they can do, as such incidents are still rare… as well as taking into account who her brother is...
  • Aata: The Beastsbane, The Shipwrecker, The Hullbreaker, he has earned many names, and all come from the fact that his purpose in life comes down to one thing and one thing only: Destroying Landlubber vessels, of any size, by punching them until they’re nothing but driftwood. The reason why he does it is simple: Destroy enough vessels in an area, and landlubbers will stay clear, thus making sure Merfolk society stays hidden. The mere concept of sending so many landlubbers to their doom is distasteful for many Merfolk, but alas, it is tolerated simply because it seems to be working so far… and no one in their right mind wants to mess with the man whose garb consists of the hides of the toughest animals the sea has to offer and sails of various ships, from the black sails of pirates to the proudest naval banners.

In spite of their vastly different lives, the twins love each other, and Aata makes a point on the importance of him not interfering with her sister’s life. If it’s what she wants to do, who’s he to blame her? Ataahua herself feels like helping landlubbers is basically an obligation to make up for her brother’s destructiveness… and can at least see where her brother is coming from (even if it’s pretty grim).

As you may have noticed, none of them have their surnames written and are known mostly by what they’re best known for: Merwhales are very private of whom and where they come from, and Merwhales find that what you do in life is more important that setting up some sort of dynasty etc.
