Today's post features two merfolk based on the letter "M" and totally-not-influenced-I-swear by media that debuted this month .

These two represent the only returning characters from last year, as they form a big part of modern Merfolk history, Keresa in terms of local history and importance to Kara, while the Sea Lord forms the basis of much of why Merfolk act the way they do.

Keresa - Megalodon

Keresa is Kara's idol, and while most young women her age look at her strength in awe, what Kara really loves about her were Keresa's personal writings and other tablets made about her during her lifetime.

Sure, she could crush rocks with her fists, sure, her own belt had the skulls of mighty reptiles, and sure, Kara herself could have fit in Keresa's hand with room to spare (possible exaggeration), that's all fine and dandy... but what made Keresa special was that she was a warm, selfless and extroverted person.

Nearly all writings about her was that she was every bit as compassionate and she was strong, and always put the needs of her community over herself.

Being able to beat a raiding party consisting of macraptorial whale, eurypterid and reptilian merfolk single-handedly is but a bonus!

Unfortunately, there seems to be major gaps in Keresa's life, which irks Kara (who works in a Museum) to no end.

There are no records of her youth, nor records of how she spent the rest of her days, only that in one, almost throwaway sentence, was that she was a eyewitness to the end of the Sea Lord's reign...

Ixandyr the Sea Lord - Mosasaurus

Perhaps the single most important figure in Merfolk history, who single-handedly turned Merfolk society from a collection of tribes, towns and city-states into a functioning marine empire, whose laws and administrative principles still form the foundations of many Merfolk societies.

He was also an infamous conqueror, whose speed and subjugation of Merfolkdom was so utterly final, that even the threat of his legions coming at your doorstep was enough to put raiders, lesser warlords and chieftans to heel, for not even the Leviathans and the Grand Toothed Sharks could fend him off... except for one.

It is unknown as to why the Sea Lord did not conquer Tridentsfall. Perhaps he originated from there, and spared them as an act of mercy or sentimentality. Perhaps he just didn't see the point.

What IS known however, more than anything else, was he was the only one to engage outright total war against the landlubbers on their shores, and no ship was safe from the might of his armies.

It is said that the only reason that he lost, was that the Red Tyrant, his greatest foe, sent a minion to attack with a weapon that no Merfolk to this day can understand, and one every child of the sea fears with dread... Ever-Flame... said to be a flame that burns even in water. The story of Ever-flame provides the folkloric template as to why Merfolk society must be kept hidden at all costs from the landlubbers.

Kara, unlike everyone else (even her book-ish baby sister and her mentor), privately thinks the story kinda feels more like a cop-out. In her mind, he was just beaten by somebody who could match his own strength. Anything else is just embellishing it.
