It took me awhile to get Azula done but here she is.This the 2ndpiece of my Avatar The Last Bender project where I draw the
characters 8 yrs after the events of the T.V. series.
My guess was Azula had to have been 14 or 15 yrs old during
T.V. series in terms of age. But all Avatar fans know that her
intelligence,demeanor,fire bending and martial arts prowess were
far advanced for a young girl of her age. Azula at age 23 is no
different only over the past 8 yrs some things have changed.
I had a long drawn debate with some of my fellow Avatar
loving friends on how I should go about re telling events that
has shaped the character to how she is in my mind based on the
T.V. series. My future version of the character is different
from what my friends have come up with. Many of them felt that
Zuko should have the Avatar erase her fire bending. Because in
the last T.V. movie Azula's mind eventually snapped. Anyone who
watched the show knows that Azula is a sociopath and with
psychotic tendencies. Her mental instability caused her demise
at the end of the T.V. series. Azula throughout the show was
almost as big a threat to Aang as the Fire Lord was. She even
actually killed Aang at the end of season 2.Luckily Katara
brought him back with a special kind of healing water.Here is my
take on Azula leading up to who she is 8 yrs later.Prepare for a lot of text lol.
Azula Reborn.
After the events of the fall of the Fire Lord .Azula is
placed in the Fire Nation prison known as Boiling Rock under
constant watch. Her mental instability has drove her virtuality
insane.Azula is Fire Lord Zuko's sister and even though she
tried to kill him on more than one occasion. Zuko has a tendency
to be lenient with women, especially his sister who closely
resembles his mother who was banished. There was no one in the
Fire Nation that could help cure her madness. He asked his Uncle
Iro if there was any way to help Azula. His uncle told him he
knows of a way but he must consult with Avatar Aang and get his
consent.
In season 2 The Avatar as well as Zuko and his uncle were in
Ba Sing Se. The leader of the Dai Li(basically the C.I.A of the
earth Kingdom) Long Fang, was using a form hypnotic suggestion
to brainwash city hosts and others to keep the Avatar from
telling The Earth King about the war involving the Fire Nation.
The Apparatus Long Fang used to have power over the city is
still in working condition underneath Lake Laogai in the Earth
Kingdom. After stating his case and pleading to Avatar Aang that
they use the machine to cure Azula's madness.The Avatar offered
his consent even though he didn't agree with the idea of using
hypnotic suggestion to help return Azula's sanity. But it was
better than the alternative of keeping her imprisoned or erasing
her anbilty to fire bend.Which Avatar Aang has done to her
father the Fire Lord . In the presence of Avatar Aang,his uncle,
and the new head of the Dai Li. Zuko used the machine to
mentally suppress the more violent aspects of Azula's
psyche.Zuko also suppressed her memories of all that transpired
after Zuko was banished from the fire nation(Season 1 of the
T.V. series) leading up to his quest to regain his honor by
destroying the Avatar.
Azula is returned to the Fire Nation palace but still under
constant surveillance. Azula has been in and out of conciousness
for weeks.Zuko is starting to regret his decision until he is
interrupted from his meal when he hears Azula screaming through
the palace calling his name. He runs towards her screams and
finds her. She collapses in his arms crying and telling him that
she didn't want him to leave. He consoles her and realizes that
she is recalling the time he was banished from the Fire Nation
by their father.Months later Azula returns to being some what
normal.
Zuko sits Azula down and tells her what has happend to their
father.How their father went crazy and almost destroyed not just
the earth kingdom but even the Fire Nation wasn't free from his
wrath.Zuko tells her that she assisted in bringing her father
down. And how the Avatar saved her life after being gravely
injured in a fall.Everything he told her was a story that Zuko
and his uncle have made up.Over time Azula begins to settle in
and hang out with old friends.Ty Lee is still with Kiyoshi
Warriors.While Mai her child hood friend is the consort and
future wife to Fire Lord Zuko.During their visits with each
other Mai notices that their are some changes. Azula is still
arrogant,quick witted, and prideful but she lacks the cruelty
that was the most dominant part of her personality.Mai was
briefed what to say and what not to say in Azula's presence.In
fact Zuko has instructed everyone in the palace to keep
appearances.Everyone has been briefed with the same story he
told Azula about their father's demise.
Azula's physical conditioning has deteroiated due to being in
prison and in out of conciousness for months. Her martial art
prowess is still top notch even though she is out of shape. But
she notices that she can no longer fire bend.Uncle Iro tells her
it is because of her injuries.
For 3 years Azula has been stuck in the palace. The only
time she is allowed to get out is during trips to Ember
Island.To ease her boredom Zuko allows her to join him when he
meets with his military advisers.Her intellect and genius level
ability as a tactician has allowed her to rise through the
military ranks and become Fire Lord Zuko's Chief Military
Adviser. While Zuko is on a trip to visit the water tribes Azula
asks one of her admirals (who happens to be in love with her and
she knows it) to allow her to join him on a mission. The mission
was to investigate the where abouts of Fire Nation rebels who
still support her father's ideals.
As they get close to the rebels reported location they get
ambushed. The Admiral quickly ordered his troops to protect
Princess Azula.They put up a decent fight but were eventually
defeated.Azula and the Admiral were captured.
Later that night the head of the rebels got in Azula's face
and began taunting her. Questioning her loyalty to the Fire
Nation and how her father was a hero. Azula shot back telling
the rebel leader how her father was a monster. The Rebel leader
laughs and and asks her who fed her those lies. He then begins
telling her what really happend.How the Avatar destroyed her
father by erasing his fire bending and how her brother the self
proclaimed Fire Lord defeated her. He laughs and tells her that
the rumors of her brainwashing were true. Azula angrily spits in
the rebels leaders face. The Leader curses and slaps her.Seeing
the woman he loves assaulted the Admiral fire bends himself
free.He fights off some of his captors and makes his way towards
his Princess side. A fire ball explodes behind the rebel leader
as he continues his assualt on Azula. The blast knocks him
away.The Admiral kneels down to pick up Azula.A strong hand
clutches the back of his neck and lifts him off the ground.The
rebel leader laughs as the Admiral's head bursts into flame.
Azula gazes in horror as she watches flame engulf the Admiral's
head and he gets tossed aside. The admiral screams in pain as he
rolls to ground trying to put out the fire to his face and
head.Azula in rage screams that the Admiral was hers.At that
moment Azula snaps. Her fire bending comes back with a
vengence.But this time its different from the time she battled
Zuko. She is in more control. Azula with a devilish smile on her
face walks towards the rebel leader with her hands engulfed in
Blue Flame.The heat disentegrates her gloves,arm guards, and her
sleeves. The rebel leader is taken back and stares in horror.He
falls to the ground as he watches Azula mercilessly disentegrate
anything she fires upon.Especially the Rebel leaders troops.She
laughs as she watches rebel soldiers disentegrate into ash
around her.Azula stands above the rebel leader who then grovels
at Azula's feet as begs her for forgiveness. Azula just stares
down at this man who just a few moments ago was beating her
almost senseless.She smiles and looks up at the sky as it begins
to rain.She sighs and walks over to the admiral who is still in
pain holding his face. She begins treating his burns.She then
tells the rebel leader that he will tell her everything that he
knows from the past 5 years concerning the fire nation and this
rebellion. Afterwards she has the rebel leader help her put the
wounded Admiral on her horse.Azula gets on the horse. She
thanks the rebel leader and slowly sets off. She smiles and
says" Well played ZuZu,well played." She then lets out a
sinister laugh as the rebel leader who still standing 30 feet
down the road bursts into blue flame.
Well there you have it Azula is back! My version of the
character from this point forward is just setting the seeds for
a coup to take back the Fire Nation from her brother. Only she
is more manipulative.The only thing she feels that is holding
her back is Avatar Aang. She doesn't know that Zuko has a fail
safe in case Azula reverts to her former insane self. Its a
trigger word that was imprinted in her subconcious during her
hypnosis sessions.
Over the next 3yrs up to now she still puts on the act as
being the loving supporting little sister. She got engaged to
the Admiral who survived the rebel ambush with her.He is the
only one she trusts with her secrets. She promises that one day
she will rule with him by her side.

Ironically enough just did a piece of Ty Lee looking a little more mature but damn always keep forgetting about how badass Azula would look and wow you nailed it without a doubt!
Really blown away at your design work on the picture itself, feels very much like comic book how she's posed with that dangerous look on her face and damn you didn't skip out on the charming side she still manages to show off.
Besides the body excellent work maturing her look, from the development of the face to even lengthening the hair to show off some age has passed her by, well done Bfetish.
Also hats off on the story you went to include too, quite well writing considering you still captured her evil and twisted nature of watching people burn and that again shows as you watch her tease you with her flames in her right hand.

She looks real-boss here, dawg. I never really got into the show for some reason. Altho now im a bit older i myt giv it a try. The film trailer also lookd visually stunning altho i hear mixed to negative reviews about it.

Interesting, you didn't go the "healing" route of waterbending (hinted at with Jet) or spiritbending (not taking her bending, but working with her to channel it into something more positive.)

And what, I wonder, happened during that time? And why did he want to do this? He did the very thing he didn't like her doing- lying. -_-'
PLEASE CONTINUE THE STORY!!! I would be more than happy to help you flesh it out into chapters- there's at least three or four's worth here.

The reason I didn't go the healing route because Katara would not have agreed to do it.And my version of Katara is the most powerful water bender. I never heard of spirit bending. I wanted a way for Azula to remain a powerful threat.That is why I took the route I did.
I basically had Zuko suppress everything that happend at the time he was banished to the battle they had from Azula's memory. So everything from Season 1 to the final T.V. movie Azula had no memory of.
He didn't want anything that would trigger any high emotional response. This would make the hypnotic suggestion less effective. Zuko wouldn't lie if it was for bad reasons or to hurt someone.But he like every person with good intentions will tell a white lie. If he told her the truth even after the use of hypnotic suggestion Azula probably would have went out of her way to despise him. And things would not have been any diffefrent than they were before.
Granted at the end of my little story the she still reverted back to her formal self but a lot less crazy.Which makes her more dangerous.

What about other healers? Yes, they were attacked by the Fire Nation, but surely one of them would buckle for what is really a young girl (and she wasn't even at the attack on the Noth Pole.) There are waterbenders that have been healing a lot longer than her- she may have gifts but surely she's not the absolute best at healing AND fighting. (that would be a little bit Mary Sue-ish) In fact, she refused training for healing. Spiritbending is what Aang did to Ozai in the finale. But some postulate that there are different versions of it than just taking away bending.
But what was going on with Azula during the first season, I wonder? That's a really big gap of time to erase. That's not just a white lie.

Sure there may be water benders out there who are better healers. But over the course of the T.V. series Katara is the one with the most battle experience and battle tested. She may not be the most powerful water bender but she is probably the most creative.Pure power can't replace actual experience in terms of using abilities in battle.Katara has one extra skill that puts her over the top over other water benders. And that's her ability to blood bend.
True Katara is more of healer.And she may not be the best healer. But her battle experience and her ability to blood bend makes her the most dangerous water bender. And in 8 yrs time I'm sure her abilities have improved.She has done more with her water bending abilities as young teenage girl than most water benders have done in their life time.And this is based on the T.V. show.
Azula didn't play a big role in season 1 as she did in season 2 through the T.V. finale. So just chalk that up to writers discretion.
Zuko is not dumb nor is he a goody to shoes. He is the Fire Lord now so he is knee deep in politics. He also has opposition with in his own circle. So I'm sure Zuko had to learn some under handed tactics to achieve his goals.We even learned that when he pursued the Avatar.
As far as lieing to his sister to protect her sanity.He did out of love. He would consider that the lesser of evil things he has done. So I would consider that a white lie. A lie is a lie, so that makes it bad. But if it was for the greater good then it serves a purpose that is beneficial for her and for him.The question is, but is it really?His decision appears to may come back and destroy him. But that makes good fiction.
