It looks absolutely beautiful! This is why I want to make larger sculptures myself. I'm a sculptor as well, but IΒ only use polymer clay at the moment so I'm pretty limited on size and some detail. This, this is what I hope I can accomplish in the future. This is the kind of ability I strive for. Absolutely stunning piece.

Thank you for the kind words! I'm glad my work could be an inspiration to you.
I hope one day you'll get to work on something this large. It was the most fun I've ever had in all the years I've been doing art. Β

Maybe. Maybe not.
I don't know if you saw any of the other pictures I took after I finished this or happened to come across any of my journals concerning this sculpture, but everything has changed since I made this submission.
The sculpture cracked before we could get it into the kiln and I had to save what I could. I managed to save the head , so instead of a full-body sculpture it's going to be a bust from her chest piece up.Β
The head has gone through it's bisque firing and still needs to go through it's last high fire. It formed some cracks during the bisque fire. After the final fire, I'm either going to leave it natural (cracks and all) or I'm going to fill the cracks with plaster and paint it a solid color (probably white). I don't want to paint it to show accuracy because I'll lose a lot of the sculptural detail I put into it. I also sculpted it with the intention of leaving it natural.

I'm obsessed with this, it's just spectacular details and that hard work, time and effort, sweat, tears, blood...was well worth it, she's a princess to be proud of.

I'm not going to paint it because I feel like it would take away from the natural beauty of the clay and hide certain details.
I'm going to rely on the forms I sculpted and the shadows cast from those forms to show that this is Luna without having to paint it.

Yes it has. I can't believe I'm almost done.
And thanks for staying interested with it for so long, even after the long periods of no updates.

To make details in sculptures like this, do you just carve them in while they're still yet ( i don't have an oven, i let my sculptures air dry )
π: 0 β©: 1
bigponymac In reply to PreciousLovesGD [2012-12-01 07:24:42 +0000 UTC]
It depends on what I'm carving. I can carve out rough forms when the clay is relatively wet and pliable, but I have to wait until it firms up before I can do any fine details. I can't let it get too dry though. If it gets too dry then I can't do any kind of work on it. I might be able to carve small details somewhat, but if I messed up there would be no way to add any clay back to fix it.
Right now the clay is in a state my teacher likes to call "leather hard". It's dry and firm enough to hold its weight and shape while still being moist enough to add clay or carve away areas and fine details.

We're going to stick it into the kiln before it gets bone dry and let it dry in there to try to cut down the risk of unrepairable cracks.
And I hope everything turns out alright too.

i know from my experiance that the less attention you give a spot the less likly to crack but Idk

That's usually the case. And if that's true then I need to be worrying about the front legs where they join to the body and the back legs at the hock. I've had to make repairs to those on two separate occasions.

How do you think the finished sculpture will look? I saw both of your sculptures "Deae Lunae" and "Of Loyalty" and I saw a significant difference in both of them. I was just wondering which final look would this sculpture have. Will it look simular to Deae Lunae or Of Loyalty..? I'd be terrified of this beautiful sculpture cracking like Deae Lunae <:c

bigponymac In reply to TheCommonTrickster [2012-12-01 07:08:40 +0000 UTC]
It's not going to look like either one. I'm going to keep it the natural color of the stone. No glazes or paints. The possibility of cracks happening are still there when it's fired, so all I can really do is hope and pray that it doesn't.

bigponymac In reply to EarthenPony [2012-11-30 02:45:05 +0000 UTC]
I honestly have no clue. I need to finish it and hope that it survives the firing process before I can/want to think about what I'm going to do with it.

EarthenPony In reply to bigponymac [2012-11-30 02:55:20 +0000 UTC]
I bet it would be a hit at Bronycon or a similar convention! Then at the end maybe you could auction it off so you don't have to lug it back home!
Of course if I spent a over a year working on something, I'd probably be pretty hesitant to risk transporting it...
π: 0 β©: 1
bigponymac In reply to EarthenPony [2012-11-30 03:03:21 +0000 UTC]
I'm sure it would be a huge hit at conventions, but getting it to them would be difficult because of the shear size and weight of it. The thing probably weighs around 200 pounds and stands at 3 feet tall.
I also don't plan on selling it for a loooong time. I want to enjoy it once I get done with it. lol

If I had my own personal studio and kiln I'd make sculptures all the time and sell them off.
