Description _______________________________________

My first complete pencil portrait of 2007!

I used to love Danny DeVito when I was a kid. He's a such a peculiar looking guy, but has done some great, iconic work.

As a kid growing up in the 80s, DeVito was a familiar figure most memorably for me as the unscrupulous Ralph in Romancing the Stone & Jewel of the Nile, plus as Arnold Schwarzeneggers brother in Twins and alongside Billy Crystal in Throw Momma From the Train.

His performance as Oswald Cobblepot/Penguin in Batman Returns needs no introduction.

Those of you who've been watching me for a while will know I generally don't do any blending or smoothing in my pencil work. I like to leave the texture in there - it adds character and had become something of a signature style. For this piece, I tried smoothing, but also preserved a bit of my usual look at the same time.

Working time: approx 8 hours

Thanks Joe, glad you like it.

And yeah, I have a mixture of pencil and digitally painted work on here. The painted pieces are done in Photoshop.

Personally I like the sketchy style, but the blending works nicely!! Usually I dont like the blended style....unless it is used for a woman with smooth skin....it is just toooo smooooth!! Excellent work again Scout!! It is good to finally see it here!! ***I enjoyed the sneak peek on myspace***

Yoggington [2007-05-10 19:28:13 +0000 UTC]

Its very easy to get carried away with those blending sticks, glad to see you didn't succumb.

Best parts I can see are those fantastic eyebrows, and the depth you created with that cleverly sharp foreground contrasted to the slightly indistinct background.

On the downside I get the feeling you wussed out of some the darkest shadows that ought to be in the ear, on the neck etc. Maybe a link to the ref pic would prove me wrong, but shouldn't there be some as dark as the jacket?

Not to take anything away from this wonderful piece mind. Keep it up, and lets see some more trad work from you soon! :yay:

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

BikerScout In reply to Yoggington [2007-05-12 15:42:33 +0000 UTC]

I'm still getting used to these new-fangled blending what-nots. Kitchen towel is working just fine for now.

It's weird - people seem to comment on the incidental things that I don't spend too long on; the eyebrows have gained several comments. I guess it's nice that you're all scrutinising it in detail!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Yoggington In reply to BikerScout [2007-05-12 18:08:35 +0000 UTC]

Any chance of a link to the ref?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

BikerScout In reply to Yoggington [2007-05-12 20:48:03 +0000 UTC]

I found the ref in a book I have called Faces featuring the work of photographer Jane Bown.

I'll try and post a scan to Scraps at some point.

I had a look at her site, some good pics there alright. Unfortunately, not high res enough to use. I shall have to seek out that book - can you tell me if her picture of Marty "Googly eyes" Feldman is in it?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

BikerScout In reply to Yoggington [2007-05-27 14:56:13 +0000 UTC]

If it's the one where he's resting his hand and smoking a fag, then yes, it's in the book.

It's probably the best resource for black & white celeb pics that I have. Robbie Coltrane, Mother Theresa, Woody Allen, DeVito... all from that one book.

Think I bought it in Borders a few years ago if that helps.

Thats the one I'm after. And that picture of Beckett was her too. Expensive book though, Β£85 -110 sterling on amazon.

BikerScout In reply to 24-santis [2007-05-10 16:23:33 +0000 UTC]

As outlined in the Comments:

Regular A4 paper.
HB, 2B, 6B, 9B pencils.
A piece of 'kitchen-towel' (as it's called here in the UK) for smoothing.
Tortillon, but minor use really.
