Enlightenment means different things to different people. Regardless of your preference, follow the path.Just a handful of the 10,000 torii in Fushimi-Inari Taisha, just south of Kyoto, Japan.

That's the place to do it.
I highly recommend late autumn (mid-November). The downside is that you'll have to make reservations for hotel space early, since it seems as if all of Japan goes to Kyoto to see the fall colors.
