Description
My first upload in 16 months!is running a character design contest for his awesome comic RandomVeus (for details go here ) which prompted me to re-read RandomVeus Volume 1. Which in turn inspired me to not only enter the contest, but to knock up this little piece in honour of my favourite RV character, Bloob.
Background painted in Procreate on an iPad 3. The rest was sketched in Procreate and finished off in Photoshop.
Bloob is the property of , but he's a nice guy and won't mind me drawing him

Your first foray into iPad sketching, and you knock it out of the park.
It'd be easy to take this on face value - A clean image of an uncomplicated character - but there's so much more to this. The transparency, the shading, the lighting...all expertly executed.
I especially love how the clouds have an inky quality to them. There's also something akin to cigarette smoke happening here (maybe it's just me).
It goes without saying, but I love this.

I reckon around 80% of this was done on the iPad. All of the background. Most of Bloob. But none of the balloons. Procreate let's you output .PSDs (to Dropbox in this case) so I didn't lose anything in the transition to Photoshop. In other words, I know it took me forever to take your advice and start drawing on the iPad, but now I can't see myself at least starting a piece on it.
I've found Bloob deceptively difficult in the past (I've attempted to draw him many times). There's nothing to hide behind, not just due to his see through nature, but also his simple design. I'm still not quite happy with this (something about his left leg. Still, the reflections were fun. I do love the challenge of a shiny surface.
The clouds are actually what came first (whenever I feel like drawing, I do either clouds or trees to warm up). I had no idea that they would be used as a background for this. If I did, I would've made it portrait instead of landscape.

Weirdly, I actually wrote "I bet you started with clouds first, even before you knew you'd use them for this", but deleted the sentence because it seemed irrelevant.
I seriously cannot wait to get my 'art' on, as it were. So many ideas...so little talent.
