Pictured here is a rifleman belonging to the 553rd Force Reconnaissance Battalion, one of the many units within the 21st Nova Corps. Force Recon detachments were assigned exclusively to Clone Marine units, and could range in size from a squad up to a battalion. They represented the premier special operations arm of the Republic Marine Corps, and were trained extensively in the fields of CQC, Direct Action, Covert Operations, Demolition, and Long Range Patrol. Each force recon marine's armour came equipped by default with a sun visor, infrared designator, rescue flare, floodlight, modular ammunition/utility pockets, three explosive charges, and a small hydration pack. Their helmets differed from that of standard troopers, featuring a slimmer visor, enlarged breathing apparatus, and additional padding on top. Only the most battle-hardened, fiercely steadfast marines were eligible for selection into the ranks of Force Recon units, having to complete a rigorous and unforgiving training course that involved full-gear marches over miles upon miles of harsh terrain. Typically, out of a group of 300 candidates, less than 40 soldiers will have successfully passed their training by the end of the process.
