I never had a Graphire and am uncertain what that involves, but I did have to downgrade to the wimpy post-bamboo non-pro intuos tablet after I could not acquire a functional replacement for my malfunctioning intuos 3. Then the post-bamboo non-pro intuos broke, but not the pen, and I replaced it with an even older regular bamboo CTL-460, which I bought on ebay for one dollar plus an about four dollar shipping cost, which I have been using for a year or so. On something like this picture, there will always be a great amount of mouse-done smoothing and error-correction after the tablet portion.

mine is even older than yours lol, mine is the CTE-450 , i wonder if your model is better than mine or if its just shaped differently. But you got it dirt cheap against all odds.
Does your overall drawing experience with the bamboo feel more degraded/inferior compared to your blissful days that youve once had with the intuos3?
I take it you use a non-optical mechanical mouse since it would be more accurate for you ? am i right ?

I do not feel like the tablet is all that different but if I compare the pictures I made with the intuos 3, I can see the difference. Learning to counteract that has taken a long time and is still not complete. It seems to be my destiny to work around inadequate hardware, however, since this sort of thing is common to my experience.
I use a mouse with a little red light that can run on any surface. The mouses with balls in them were terrible and I would never go back to that willingly! They would constantly lose traction and cause erroneous strokes. Fortunately, unlike everything else, relatively sophisticated mouses are inexpensive even when purchased new.

youre able to make good use of that tablet irrespective of any sho摩rtcomings it may have and thats pretty cool lol. I was never able to experience the ball mouse becuase it was before my time and i just somehow thought it would be more accurate than the red light mouses.

The ball needs to grip not just the surface, and many surfaces it will not grip at all, but two wheels above the ball, also. And the ball can get dirty or sticky from rolling over the wrong things, interfering with its ability to grab the ground or turn the wheels. And of course if it picks up grime it can transfer that to the wheels. Or the lower-inside piece that allows the ball to be removed or inserted, which it is always rolling against. Much can go wrong! I could not draw efficiently using a mouse until I had the balless kind. They track the ground more consistently and are less particular about what ground they require.
I make decent use of the tablet, but again it is less efficient than it could be.

Thank you! The only trouble for me is making the lines smooth.
