Description This is a look at the reproductive and brooding habits of Amblymichra mephitis, a species belonging to the family Platicaridae (see previous post).
This species is smaller and relatively incapable of protecting it's eggs, so it's has evolved a unique way of keeping them out of harms way. The parent bores a hole into the roots/trunks of an eodronta tree, where it then implants an egg sack containing the developing embryos of it's young. The mucus membrane of this sack is coated with a special species of infectious bacteria which is harbored in the creatures ovipositor. Once implanted, the bacteria create a minor infection on the root of the tree, causing it to react and form a hardened gnarl over the wound. Meanwhile the membrane of the egg sack expands to fit the space, creating a cavity within the growth. The parent later drills two holes in this newly formed nest, allowing air to circulate.

More details coming soon, including an illustration of the progressive formation of the tumor nest.
