Description
Most crab mushrooms reproduce asexually through dispersal of sporopods - highly developed, complex spores controlled by a rudimentary nervous system, guided by limited sensory systems, and capable of motility to aid in seeking out fertile grounds for germination. Some sporopods (like that of the striped crab mushroom) are capable of harvesting nutrients which are stored in “packets” for later use to feed the growing primordium.
