In my bid for the national autumn artshow, I resurrected this old idea [link]

I felt very good about it for quite a while. Then doubt crept in, and a week after I had sent it in I had an image in my mind of the same idea but framed and done differently...and it would have looked much, much better then this one. I bought two slices of cake for comfort. It was either that, or cry

Another issue I realized that probably sparked my doubt is the lack of force in the face and the flat eyes. It lacks expressive emotion that grabs you.

I spent ages on those suckers...not to mention the jelleyfish with all their appendages. I really, really wish I hadn't wasted so much time on those, when the result is too busy and lacks force.

I think I may need more cake

As said with the drawn version, this is the reason for the name:

I kept the title in Norwegian because in its translation it loses some of the point. The strict translation is insanity, but if you break it down to the three first letters, Vann, it means water. All right, not exactly a marvel of wordplay. I just got a visual idea that I liked and the title just dropped into place. (the other part probably comes from Vidde, which is an open stretch of land in mountains without much trees, or Vid, which means broad)

Thank you again for spending such time on my work And again it's very fair game too.

As for the arms they were a cop out I tried drawing them in but however I arranged them they unbalanced the image, and didn't look too good doing it either. So I tried to sneak away from the issue by having them unravel. You're not the first to question this though, so my escape has been foiled!

The lack of reaction and dishevelment may also be among the reasons why it doesn't have the visual force that it had when i imagined it. I'm tempted to restart from scratch on this, making it more compact, having less stuff, focus more on what is in it, and getting the emotions across.

Your critique has been helpful in giving me ideas of what to pay attention to the second time around, thanks

Your choice of color for the piece is particularly vibrant when set against the relative darkness of the background. Said background is a bit difficult to distinguish (a submerged cave, by the looks of it.) However, the dark tone suits the overall theme of the piece, as well as the expression on the character's face.

The parts of the creature that may indeed be considered human are somewhat lacking in definition (excluding the detail at the base of the neck as well as the area around both eyes.) This may in fact be tied to lighting, as the skin tone and overall shadow to the upper body should be much darker, keeping in line with the creeping shadows around the corners of the piece. The glow cast by several of the jellyfish adds a wonderful element, and I might suggest limiting your light source to only the soft glow of the jellies. Some of the detail to the tentacles may fade in the process, but overall there are enough jellyfish present to provide an adequate light source to the figure.

The expression used certainly comes across as one of insanity, though at this point I am uncertain whether or not it is truly the effect of the expression or simply the chaotic nature of the piece as a whole. If this is agreeable, I would suggest to intensify the force of the bite. The trick there would be to inject a bit more violence into the act, while maintaining the look of sadistic enjoyment that is already present in the features.

Lastly, you really must be commended for your exquisite work on both the tentacles and the jellyfish. I can almost feel the warmth of the jellies soft glow, and the sense of caring devotion is evident in each sucker. There is a definite sense of oceanic flow to the image which I quite enjoy.

Sorry about such a late reply, and to my horror the voting thingy actually expired as well and now i can neither say yea or nay That'll teach me to procrastinate But i assure I would naturally had said it was very fair and even generous.

As for the critique you've made some good points. I was never quite happy with the shading and shadowing of the skin, and felt there could be more force to the bite and facial expression as well.
After some distance to the image a new version has popped into my mind that might suit the concept better. I hope I can paint it the way I think it should look.

Again, sorry for what happened with the delay on my part, considering you've spent both effort and time to share your opinions, and thank you

Now this is just plain awesome! . First of all, I have an obsession with jellyfish, and yours are awesome. Second of all, I love the bold colours and how well they represent the scene. Finally, I think the concept is brilliant! I read your super-long description and while the concept came to you in a very vague manner, I think it's awesome how you took the idea and just went for it. I also appreciate how you took note of where you could have improved and how it could have been better. So I have nothing to say but that this is absolutely wonderful! Keep up the great work!

Hi, and sorry for such a late reply. I've been gone for a long while, and am now trying to answer at least some of my many forlorn comments.Β

Basically the long ones and the questions.Β

Anyway, thank you for the sweet words, and for reading the description too. Though that one is not long by my standards Β

There may, once I get my backside in gear, more jellyfish art in the future I'm more fascinated than fond.Β

I noticed the title since I'm Norwegian, and I read your comment. It's correct, it means insanity, and it's an interesting wordplay. We use the word vanvidd (only with one n) and the prefix van- means lack of something. The suffix vidd means wit/witty. In other terms:lack of wit. But we Norwegians also use vanvidd as a wordplay, like if you see a photo with kids playing in water, you can say: det glade va(n)nvidd. (the happy madness)

Well that was my language nitpicking, the painting is lovely, and somehow a bit scaring (I've a phobia for certain water creatures, that's why I prefer to swim in lakes, not in the sea ) I love the colours, and the sheen on the jellyfishes is gorgeous!
