I did a bit of digging. Apparently a lot of cultures expand on the black cats being unlucky and apply the same superstition to other animals
Thanks ^^

I think it's just black in general. If you look up color symbols black is always darkness or something. Frankly, I have no problem or superstition ^^

*laughs* well, if it's of some comfort, we don't have problems with black roosters here in Italy xP Not lucky nor unlucky... Even if not many loves them because of the unholy hour they wake you up in the morning XD

You know from where that superstition comes from? In the Middle Age, they thought that black cats and black roosters where demons in desguise, and so the Inquisition would burn at the stake anyonme owning one. ^^' That's why I'm surprised to find such a superstition in Anglosaxon countries, instead of in a Catholic one, such as Italy or Portugal...

Black always tended to have negative meanings in most Europe, especially since it's considered a color for death and mourning. Also it's the color associated with night, and therefore magic. And because cats are also night creatures it's not surprising they had a particularly bad reputation (this is my theory)
But in terms of superstitions I'm not surprised some of the older ones survived the catholic influence (even though many changed over time). From what I've heard the Inquisition purge against competing belief systems was worse in northern Europe than in the south, so that likely helped

Most black animals are seen as unlucky. Roosters aren't particularly common but there's a good amount of superstition liking them to spells and witches
