Thanks Malcolm. We put it off as long as possible, but just couldn't keep her safe anymore. She just kept getting worse.

Thankyou. She is beautiful, and it has been very difficult to deal with given her loving, gentle personality and good physical health.

Unfortunately I can assure you they do. Apparently it is quite common in retrievers, and develops as they get older. She has been on huge doses of valium, but her fear continued to feed itself to the point of being scared of something nearly all the time. Towards the end even the buzz of a fluorescent light turning on would trigger an attack causing her to tremble severely and attempt to run off.
Maddisson suffered an exceptionally severe case of the disorder.

Thanks Gosia. She certainly was. It has been a very difficult but absolutely necessary decision.

I believe she would have been hit by a car in the near future, causing a lot more suffering. She had taken to running at cars looking for me after escaping. A dangerous habit!!!

I think you made the right decission - even if it hurts. It will get better - and she does not suffer anymore.

I know we did the right thing although it is difficult to accept sometimes.

Thanks Lizelle. She was a great companion, I wish I had made more time for her when she was younger. I know she loved me immensely as she just craved my constant attention and company even though we rarely 'played'.

She had a couple of good quality days at home with me in the end. Most of the time with her was good except for the frustration caused by her uncontrolled behavior. (I will not make excuses for her amazing hole digging though!)

Thanks Michelle. She certainly was!
She especially loved me and my family. She often lay there just watching me waiting to be acknowledged.(which eventually led to separation anxiety)

That is sad. Unfortunately they all slow down at one point. I've noticed the aging process taking its toll on my darling dog as well.

Poor Maddy was only 7 and very healthy. She suffered anxiety attacks on an ever increasing basis. In her fear she was escaping from our house and cage I bought this year to try and contain her when I am at work. During her escapes she was injuring herself and causing a lot of damage to my property and house. She has recently taken to running at cars in her search for me to comfort her, and it was going to cause an accident soon for sure. I believe she was becoming very depressed from her nearly constant fear of everthing. (It started with just thunder storms) Even with us sometimes taking time off work to stay with her, she still managed to run off if we turned our back on her for a few minutes. We have tried all sorts of things to help her including training methods and medication, but in the end her madness just consumed her. It has been very difficult to watch her deteriorate regardless of our efforts.

Thanks Elise. We were doing some quick maths tonight and realized she was only 5 or 6, not 7 as I thought. This means she really only had about 2 good years before her problems began to develop. Back then all I was doing was reinforcing weak spots in our fencing. The following year I installed an electric fence. Last year I locked her in my garage when we were out, and this year in a large cage inside the garage. She still escaped frequently, letting out our pug dog in the process also. They were great company for each other, and she regularly cleaned his face and looked after him although he is much older.
I am not in a hurry to replace any of our current pets as they go, but would eventually like another 'lap' dog to keep out cavalier puppy 'Lizzy' company.

Thanks Darren. It has been a tough few days. Some difficult decisions.
She was becoming a big danger to herself in her moments of madness.
