people who argue otherwise amuse me, do many of them actually consider the definition of the word 'animal' be for making their claim? - "any member of the kingdom Animalia, comprising multicellular organisms that have a well-defined shape and usually limited growth, can move voluntarily, actively acquire food and digest it internally, and have sensory and nervous systems that allow them to respond rapidly to stimuli"- do humans not fit in to this in any way? I'd be quite interested if you could tell me otherwise with a valid statement of coarse. :3

the most unbelievable argument I've ever entered was trying to convince a girl in biology class that as humans, we were in fact animals as well. she justified her claim with "I'm not an animal! humans are mammals, but they aren't animals! animals don't think and people do, so I'm not one"
so then, I suppose by that logic, anything within the class mammalia must have been expunged from it's respective kingdom. taxonomy must need an update... right?

No. Science says that humans are not the only sentient beings. An example of something that is not a sentient being is a jellyfish.

Sentience refers to having a soul, or spirit if you're Christian; Science says that ideas, feelings and emotions and memories are chemical reactions in the brain and that a secondary level of existence like thought does not exists. Because it can't be seen. Which means that writing this is the result of an unknown amount of chemical reactions.

Having written that statement so long ago I forgot I ever wrote it, I have to evaluate my next reply.
To add further context to my former statement, sentience, though contextually meaning awareness additionally, does not prove or disprove the existence of a soul or spirit. It's an subjective field of discussion but one I believe in.

Humans are members of the primate family, like monkeys, chimps etc. So if we're genetically connected to animals, why aren't we classed as animals too? The funny thing was that some kids in my neighbourhood think that the opposite of an animal is a human, which is pretty retarded too. Humans are not fucking gods, we're just a product of Darwinian evolution like everything else. We have the amino acid sequences in our DNA and all kinds of biological evidence to prove that humans are members of the animal kingdom.

Regardless, I certainly agree--humans are just as much animals as fish, reptiles, dogs, and chimpanzees. However, if we can all somehow suppress our lesser needs (like...say, having sex with the nearest breathing thing like a bird I once saw harassing and "dancing courteously" for another bird of the wrong species 'cause he was desperate for sex) and actually prove to be at least a little better than other animals.
