Description Bub and Bob. Also known as Bubben and Bobben deppending on the incarnation, game, and translation. Possibly the first reptilian computer characters. Taito's [link] little dinosaur heroes made thier first appearance in Bubble Bobble. An arcade game that appeared very early in gaming history. The premise of Bubble Bobble was that an Evil Wizard™ eliminated Bub and Bobs parents, kiddnaped their girlfriends, and turned them into human dinosaur hybrids aka magic reptilian abominations that are an affront to nature or MRATAAATNs. Evil Wizard™'s are bastards like that. Or thats as best as I can recall the story anyway. The objective of the game was to control Bub and Bob as the begin on an amazing journey into the cave of monsters (owned by said Evil Wizard™) when they would to battle with more magic abominations for 99 levels before confronting the Evil Wizard™ himself and rescuing thier girlfriends by means of using thier new dinosaur spewtum creating abilities (Often enhanced with assorted varieties of bubble gum) teeth and claws and drinking magic potions that let them spit bubbles filled with lightning. Or at least that was the general idea. You couldn't actually complete the game playing alone. If just Bub or Bob finished the game only that character girlfriend was saved and you got a message telling you this is not a true ending and you should not forget your friend and leave them behind. Some say this was a capatalist scam by Taito to increase the number of quarters put into thier arcade machines by forcing two players to play in order to complete the game. Personly I think they were just trying to encourage teamwork and social interaction. As it stands Bubble Bobble was one of the first two player games ever made (obviously Pong was the first) and is an excellent early example of games developing into a form of social recreation rather then the sterotyped loner activity. If succesful in completing the game with both Bub and Bob alive players are awarded with both girlfriends been rescued and from memory they even get changed back into humans. Still this is not a true ending shows up, this time however with by a secret code. Players who were good enough would eventualy wind up in bonus levels with simlar code written on the walls. Basicly each level showed a certain number of characters and if you wrote them down in order for each bonus level you'd eventual discover it was an alphabet. Thus you could work out what the code stood for, which was usualy something like jump, left, left, up, jump, right, etc. depending on the platform the game was released on. When this control sequence is entered at the title screen it unlocks a new game mode known as super bubble bobble. Same game but with tougher enemies in the levels. If you complete super bubble bobble with both characters Bub and Bob's girlfriends are saved, they are turned back to humans, and they discover thier parents are still alive and well trapped at the bottom of the cave of monsters and rescue them to. Due to poor translation this game ending coined the expression which made all best possible endings for a game with multiple endings known as "Happy End".

Bubble Bobbles replayability is almost endless and to date it is still my favorite arcade game. Bub and Bob later appeared in thier human form in the game called Rainbow Island. Again they set of the defeat an Evil Wizard™ who was sinking thier island using the power of rainbows or some such. There was a Rainbow Island 2 as well I think. Eventualy Bub and Bob got turned back into Dino's and thus was the origin of either Bubble Bobble 2 or Bubble Bobble Hero's Quest... Possibly the same thing. Anyway it was never released in English. Later Bub and Bob in dino form for the second time went on to be the hosts in the game Bust-a-move (also known as puzzle bubble) and it's sequals. The bubble bobble games are currently availble on the Taito Legends packs for PC and consols [link] Bubble Bobble Old and New which includes both the classic bubble bobble and an upgraded version, and recently on the Nintendo DS Taito released Bust-A-Move DS, Bubble Bobble Revolution and Rainbow Island Revolution.

Bub and Bob in this Picture were based on the cut scene incarnations of them in bubble bobble old and new, which is my favorite incarnation of them so far. This was a quick practice to experiment with drawing them. I will draw more of them later if for no other reason I want to make a bubble bobble T-shirt for myself.

Very cute art, dude.

Hey, because there's almost no art of Bub and Bob in their human forms, I thought I might do some of my own, any chance of looking at them and commenting on them?

That's probably the first time I've heard Bub and Bob's full origin. I never played much video/computer/arcade games growing up, but I thought these two were very cute. Whenever I listen to Ace of Base's "Sign", I think of them.

The flash rip offs suck. They pale in comparison to the complexity of the orignal... No they really do.
