Myself, Man!Self, Woman!Self

“Whatever I want to be” is a self portrait assignment I did for one of my photomedia subjects last year (yes I had blonde hair back then XD). We had to do something that reflected ourselves, hence I decided to explore the issue of my androgynous appearance and dress sense…

To those of you that don’t know me in real life, I can tell you know that I fit nothing of your stereotypical female image. I like having my hair short, I barely wear makeup, and I don’t wear a single piece of clothing that anyone would consider strictly for girls.
I prefer to dress in guy style clothes, or at least unisex types. I…pretty much look like a guy in real life 8’DD And have on many occasions (especially of late) be mistaken for a guy in public.

Whilst it is a bit awkward at times, I’ve come to laugh about it and it’s become a running joke amongst some friends to refer to me as their ‘boyfriend’ XDD ~

Though despite me being rather carefree about it all, my family and relatives unfortunately weren’t, and this issue became rather blown out of proportion during my recent family holiday back to Taiwan.

The last time I saw any of my relatives I wasn’t so…transgendered (for a lack of better word ;; ) so they were all kind of shocked at my appearance this time.
A few of them expressed their ‘concerns’ to my parents about it, and some even confronted me directly about my so called problem.
What angered me greatly was that the majority of these people have barely talked to me my whole life, and their knowledge of myself as a person extended to my name and if I’m lucky, my age and what I study. THAT’S IT.

Yet suddenly, they feel the need to judge my entire person on my appearance, also confronting myself AND my parents about it, to the point that my parents and I had a breakdown over the simple fact that I DON’T DRESS LIKE A GIRL SHOULD. Yea I know, crazy right? :///

To be honest, the majority of them had the mindset that “she dresses like a guy, therefore she must be gay or could turn gay, and that is a problem”…/FACEPALM/

My sexuality aside, I felt rather degraded over the fact that relatives would openly assume my sexual preference just by the way I looked and dressed.

Whilst it’s very frustrating, at the same time I cannot blame them because that’s what their generation has been brought up to believe. That all girls should look a certain way and all boys should look a certain way, and being homosexual was unnatural/wrong.
I even had a relative tell me directly that “you dress like a gay person”….orz;; It took all I had not to talk back in rage at them T____T (not coz I think it’s bad to be mistaken for a lesbian, but for the fact that they think it’s alright to talk to people like that)

To me it was very much like…so what if I don’t want to look like a traditional image of a girl? So what if I sometimes get mistake for a guy? So what if one day I actually was gay? Is my fashion sense really such a big issue that all of a sudden that’s everything I’m defined by?

I can safely say that I am not gender confused just because I like to wear suits instead of dresses. I know full well that I am a girl, but that doesn’t mean it’s wrong for me to hate dressing myself as one right? T___T

I personally feel really uncomfortable when I am forced to wear strictly female clothing (not out of my own will)…and I just don’t think I look any good in them.
Dressing more like a guy/unisex allows me to be myself more, and makes me more confident and outspoken. It allows me to go outside feeling that I look decent and not that everyone is looking at me weirdly.
Call it a social anxiety thing if you will, but I like to think that I dress to make myself comfortable and look nice, rather than making other people ‘not confused’ about my gender X’DD

When I returned from my trip, I looked back at this piece and felt like I relate even more to it now…

My image may be a guy, or a girl, but inside you’re still getting the same person.
I think it’s absolutely fine if a girl want to wear guys clothes or vice versa, as long as you wear it with dignity and wear it with confidence.
It’s a cliché line, but be whatever you want to be and don’t let your gender or other people’s misperception define and judge you. Wear/and look like what you want to make yourself comfortable, not to make other’s feel comfortable

Afterall, if you look fabulous, you will feel fabulous and therefore express yourself as a fabulous person and others will think you’re fabulous! *sleep deprived logix orz;;*

Sorry for the giant rant. I hope there was some sense in all that;; Thank you *MeLRizA and *Emorenji again for helping me make this image happen! <3

I am curious to know what you think of this issue too, would like to know that I am not insane in my way of thinking X’DD (or confirmation that I am if that’s the case haha ;; )

I argued with myself for a while on whether I should upload this to dA, as I was worried that some people may take offence to the topic…Nothing I’ve written above is intentionally meant to offend anyone, it’s myself and my ramblings~

Would you be willing to buzz your hair. A lot of guys tend to do that. You could probably pull it off.

This is such a great concept! The photo is so awesome *_* It's really cool of you to put it out there and write about it. You are not alone! My fam isn't too bad about it but they are all convinced I'm going to come out one day XD; It's so silly. Personally I will have no complaints if you continue looking like Hawkeye... >DDD

I have to say that the way your family reacted just makes me angry but I do agree that it isn't REALLY their fault. Still, I think you, and everyone else, are completely beautiful being themselves. It's sad really, when so many people in this world are afraid of being who they really are. I'm considered gothic just because I wear damn near only black clothes just because I feel like I look horrible in anything else. Whenever someone freaks out at me for being "goth" I just laugh and walk away.

Oh gosh, I feel your pain. I wear a lot of black too, since it's my favourite colour, and people have called me emo etc...But good job on not worrying about them, people like that really aren't worth our time

Still adore the concept of this shot and all of the reasoning behind it~ <3 I envy your strength for being able to put up with that much crap from people, and over such a stupid topic! Everyone should be able to dress in what they're comfortable in, I seriously don't understand how people can be so openly judgemental >____< At any rate, keep wearing what you're wearing and be who you want to be! ... but you look awesome in guy's style. Actually you're awesome in your female cosplays too but I'm more used to seeing you in the former, and there's nothing wrong with you dressing like that. It's good that you've got a style that suits you and you're comfortable in too, and the way one dresses does have to relate to gender issues... but sigh, relatives... recently I had someone who saw a comment on another person's fb (in which I randomly vented out some frustration) and came to the conclusion that I hated my family then started gossiping about me, so even if it wasn't the person on my flist itself to be safe, I deleted most of my relatives ;; (not that they talk to me much either, beyond the 'what are you doing now'). Everyone thinks I'm perpectually studying for some reason and that it's weird I have not had a relationship when all my cousins had a few by my age ;;

I actually didn't start wearing dresses often until a few years ago, though for me it was more of a style / interest change, in highschool I was in their military and khaki phase (thanks to JAG, to the point I wanted to become a military lawyer so I wore pants and collared shirts most of the time. I also tied up my hair everyday too. People would always comment why I hardly wore skirts and dresses. It was also partly for the convenience and honestly whenever I tried wearing girly clothes it'd be an epic fail. I would buy stuff according to what was loose and looked nice on the rack but maybe did not suit me haha. I only started reading up on coordinates and stuff in mid-uni~ but it's when I became more aware of stuff that suited me did I get more comfortable in other types of clothes.
Though I do dress 'girlier' now, I can't wear anything with a skirt without leggings/tights (even so the first time I tried tights I was kinda awkward, but they somehow grew on me)... I'd still feel exposed otherwise, and I fidget too much while sitting~ Even for shorts, I only wear them at home or if it's mandatory for PE lessons. The 'girly' item that I have yet to get into is heels, the only exception I've made was for ballroom dancing, lol. I'm such a klutz I even trip in slippers, so I only wear sandals or covered shoes ;

Eeps, realized how rambly that was... sorry I tend to do that.

Think the problem with asian family/relatives is that EVERYONE IS SO GOSSIPY D8 Seriously you would think they have better things to do with their time....and they love putting on a friendly facade in everyone's presence, but they're really all just bitching about each other behind their backs lol.
I have relatives on my friends list too...should go around to deleting or blocking them >__>;;

I mainly seen you in girl style but I think you would look great in military too!! 8DD Khaki stuffs look great afterall~ At least you're trying, I can't even rmb the last time I wore a skirt/dress that wasn't for cosplay purposes lol 8'DD Even at formal events, I just wear suits now hahaha. Dresses and other girly things really don't suit my boisterous personality...I'd just look like a guy crossdressing instead LOL

But thank you for your support Jac, I really appreciate it ;w;

Good for you. You should be proud of who you are. There's a saying my mom likes and I believe it's true. Visionaries are always afflicted with Nay-Sayers. The same can be said for this case. In a society that demands perfection, rebel against the 'norm.' Or something like that. I myself am living with a woman who has a very narrow view on how life should be and doesn't accept the kind of people my mom and I are, thusly refuses to believe a lot of people are like us.

Blackcrane56 In reply to AmandaBloodhart [2012-02-26 12:44:13 +0000 UTC]

I agree with you, its saddening that our society is still so gender stereotyped
Tho tbh I don't really dress myself as a guy in order to rebel against this stereotype tho it may seem like it. I really just dress like a guy because I find it both more comfortable for myself and I look better in it X'DD I wish I had more noble intentions haha;;

Gahh it must be extremely frustrating for you then Narrow minded people are just impossible sometimes..

They can be, but I stopped caring what people thought of me when I was 10. Just because one does things that others deem weird, doesn't mean it's unnatural. If we we're all expected to act a certain way depending on our gender, culture, skin colour, etc...life would be very boring. Life evolves, get over it. Silly people are silly.
