Description Herbert West–Reanimator

Lovecraft’in öykülerinden okumanızı gerçektende tavsiye ederim.

I have had read that this was of the stories that H.P. Lovecraft had felt most forced to complete… and would agree that it is not exactly his usual style. But it was a fine story that does manage to keep you hanging on the edge.
It is about a doctor obsessed with overcoming death.
I would strongly advise your reading Lovecraft's stories.

This is an airbrush illustration from a series I had done as a rather newbie illustrator. But sadly they are not the best photographed due to their size.
Save from damage that has appeared with time, most of it was intentionally done due to add an aging effect.
You may find others as well as the story behind it here: [link]

This is fantastic!

This is pritty much how I pictured Herbert West when I read Lovecrafts short story, and yes, lovecraft DID describe him as being slender, blonde haired, blue-eyed, with youthful, delicate features.
I love the way you've drawn his cold hard eyes, and his palid emotionless features, and the way in which the dead bodies from his experiments are piled beneath his feet, as if he is some kind of vengeful god.
A very powerful and chilling image, thankyou for sharing it with us.

Thank you so much for the time you have reserved to comment so generously on my work.
Yes the descriptiveness of the character is dominant throughout the series of chapters... I presume he wanted to make sure that readers would not miss out on the basics if they had not read the previous issue.

None the less as I read through it this was pretty much the image that I developed in my head in regards to the descriptions.
This is the only image that I actually needed reference images in making the bodies laying ontop of each other. The original piece is almost 2 meters high so the reanimator appears about life size. İn standing in front of it you do not directly see the bodies but more sense their existence.

Thank you SO much for your kind words!

I really like this depiction of West. I forget how Lovecraft actually described him, ( If he did? ) , but most of the Herbert fan art I see is as played by Jeffery Combs. I definitely liked Combs as West, but being all pale, pretty and blonde here definitely makes him look eerie and lovecraftian.

I had not known that most depictions of him were the likes of Jeffery Combs. But I am pretty much going to keep an eye out for that now on

As for describing Herbert West: He particularly repeats the description on many of the chapters. I speculate that due to this story being published on a magazyne he wanted to ensure that the image of his character was refreshed in the mind of the readers (Or give an idea to those that have no read the previous issues).

That said I have had painted what I had envisioned him to be as I read through out.
And I am very glad that an eeriness has shined through in spite it does not exactly fit what your expectations for his features would have been.
Thank you so much for your kind words1

I like how the sterile atmosphere coincides with the Doctor himself and then gives way to what at first glance appears to be an outpouring of lust, closer, and you realize they're all either dead or in agony.
Off to library I go, haven't read this story yet...

Thank you VERY much!

That is just fantastic news for me since it was exactly the intention.
Both in the impression given and the end result (Sadly people read books by covers still. And if an illustration is able to enforce one to buy a book... the illustrators job is complete )

I had been particularly influenced by the repeated description the so mentioned doctor is given.
Since it was a serialized article that was meant to leave readers on the cliff and have a short cap of the events to date; this description was enriched in each new chapter I had had read... until finalizing to the character you see here.
The rest of the atmosphere was a lot more complex at first until I had realized that I told too much a blah blah... but little of the story essence. Hence the need for the sterile/hospital enigma with a not so sterile maintained state.
And the flush of people... as you stated were dragged out puddling his investigations to clear view.

I would definitely advise you to read this one... as much as it is not typical Lovecraft in the manners of story telling; it is definitely a great story. And I would argue of it to be the best reanimator story that I have read to date (I have read a dear few...) because here the story is not littered with zombies and so forth... it is like a natural development of a series of events evolving around how the experiments develop, effects of daily life and so forth.

It is a short story so it won't take more than a day to the slowest of readers... And I would claim it to be a day that you would owe yourself if you have any admiration to Lovecraft's works.

Thank you again...
