Description
The Round-Crested Cockatielfish (Cyclolophocephalus Antiquus) is a basal Psittacosteocristine Pedalionmorphid Ichthyomorph from the northern section of the Jano-BlathΓ nna Ocean.
The animal lives exclusively among the treetops of the ancestral forests, using the prehensile palatine tongue to pick the youngest leaves and ripe fruits it then chops with the hard beak.
Contrary to most other more derived members of its subfamily, this animal lives the majority of its life submerged, having a more rudimentary floatation apparatus and using it mostly to escape predators by darting backwards.
When threatened, the species will flee the dense vegetation of the treetops to the open waters above. where their predators, like Exsertognathus lolligii, become prey of bigger pelagic animals.
As with many other members of the subfamily, the male genitalia is extremely long, used to anchor on the females that will swim frantically about during the whole mating process as a way to attract and throw away potential partners that are not strong enough to mate with them.
The species communicates through changing colours and patterns of the crest, a major factor in mating selection too as a way for males to contest the right to attempt mating.
