Description

Chalybomaxillae fulmineus is a large Titanid Hijerakid amphibian from the tropical waters of the Gulf Sea.
As a major player in the bioerosion processes of the outer reefs (being too large to enter the inner sections), the animal is most famous for the disproportionally large head and the strong musculature and tendon structure it uses to achieve maximum bite strength to easily crush the massive Coral-like plants of its habitat.
The animal is born with its teeth unfused and feeding on thinner coral morphologies often found deeper in the water column compared to its usual habitat.
While growing the dentine around the teeth will fuse into a set of long and sharp plates.
Sometimes called the "Sandmaker", the animal will eat entire coral sections whole, outer exoskeleton included, making short work of the latter through the powerful sphaera lania inside the mouth.
After the plant has been digested and absorbed, the animal will excrete a cloud of white sand, the remains of the plant's protective shell, which will deposit on the seafloor and act as a growing substrate for new plants to grow upon.
Although normally quite docile, during the mating season they'll become more aggressive, especially the females, going as far as attacking small boats or other vessels who sail in its waters.
Anthropic maritime activities have been observed disturbing the species and driving it away from their habitat, often leading to beachings of the species and contributing to its decline and local extinction of several smaller populations.
