Description This is a picture of my DRSSTC (Direct Rate Solid State Tesla Coil.) I used 4 IGBT's (Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistors) in place of the spark gap used in conventional tesla coils. It runs at 250 BPS (Beats Per Second) and puts out about 350,000 Volts. The ionised plasma channels it generates can reach temperatures of over 40,000 Fahrenheit, and stretch up to Two Feet into the air with no return contact! In this picture, I am using a pad of steel wool as a break out point for the streamers. The heat of the plasma turns the steal wool into molten steal almost instantly, creating a near thermite display!!

I’ve done the classic, but one of these days I’d like to make a solid stave version, though I’d probably use the PLL method. Did you have to refine your circuit?

Do you have a site with more pictures, specs and schematics about your DRSSTC, I'm interested how you made it. I like your idea to use steel wool on top of the TC, it creates an nice effect, but doesn't it damage the secundairy coil?

Hey there! Unfortunately, I never made a website dedicated to my Tesla Coils, as I work on a lot of different projects and making a website for every one of them would be grotesquely monotonous!

I do have many other pictures however! Some of them are on my facebook: [link] If you want to see more, I can email them to you!

My schematics are pretty basic and don't differ to heavily from the schematic on here: [link] I like to use pretty heavy duty heat syncs on my IGBT's though, as it tends to make the bridge rectifier more forgiving... I also use potentiometers to adjust my Pulse Rate and Pulse Width. This helps when I want to run it for longer periods of time!

Thanks BTW! The heat from the steel wool has damaged my toroid before, but I coated my secondary with a thick coat of epoxy resign, so it is pretty well protected!

Damn, the link to your facebook doesn't work, I would love to see more pictures, so could you mail them? BTW, have you ever heard of Picasa Web Albums, it works great to show people pictures of your projects. I use it by myself, because I hate to make my own website and write about the projects, I got more interesting thinks to do

At the moment I'm starting to make a singing Tesla coil for my Bachelor's final project, so I'm looking where to get useful information. But thank you for the link, see every one who makes a DRSSTC knows Steve Ward.

I was already afraid for the damage XD

I don't know you... but we should hang out. You seem like lots of fun. Any thing that includes anywhere on the page: Sparks, Tesla Coil, Plasma, and Thermite; Is something i want to be part of. When are we going to make a Thermabaric bomb, Or microwave a Halogen Lightbulb? If you do that, call me. i want to watch! HAHA! Great shot! That must have been fun, it makes the fireworks I shoot off look like kids stuff!

Thanks man! Sorry it took me so long to respond... I live in Japan and things have been pretty crazy around here lately...
Dude! I would totally love to hang out with you! Most people think I'm crazy for doing things like this! I also love lasers! I made a 800mw, 532nm laser using an IR, (808nm) 2w C-Mounted diode, resonated to 532nm by a ND:YAG crystal. I shot this picture using it! [link]
Also, I listened to some of your music! It's good man! What program(s) do you use? My brother and I write as well! Here are a few of our songs if you are interested: [link] Tell me what you think! (And you can be honest, I don't mind a little crit! )

P.S. Fireworks in any form, are never kids stuff... Boom, Boom all the way! Long live explosions!!

...Why does someone so Epic live so far away... But I REALLLY hope things are ok for you over there. I actually thought about the fact that you lived in Japan, and wondered how you were doing. Things are going to be tough that's for sure. Best of luck with all that!

As for the music, I use two programs, FL Studio 8 for mostly making drum loops, its a bit hard to get the right sound i want with it though. MOST of the songs i uploaded there are Royalty-Free Drum Loops. I have NEVER taken a Music Theory class, and i don't play any instruments. I am trying to learn how to make riffs in Midi in FL Studio 8, but i just got the program.

I mainly use Sony Acid Pro 6, because before i got into making stuff with midi and VSTi's, I was just playing around with loops. I am REALLLY Experimenting with music now to see what i can do. If you want a list of the Free VSTi's I find useful i can note them to you. I have some pretty powerful ones even though they are freeware. TAL Noisemaker is a good one, as well as many DSK VSTi's. I might as well give you a list of what i mostly use for VSTi, I find they are very powerful if used right. Plus if you download and use them, we can share presets we make and Save.

many of the songs that you saw in that link in my journal used both Midi and Synthloops. I only had ONE song where I used all Loops. That was R49E, and that was just because it was Epic.

And yes, Fireworks are fun. I hope that when everything is all settled in Japan. They have a big Party to honor those lost. Like a Day of Remembrance. Lots of Booze, and lots of Boom. Something where you remember those lost by celebrating their lives. Good luck man, I hope that Everything works out for you over there.

P.S. I am going to check out your music and reply in a note. too much typing already!
