I had not seen the comments below, but now I read that you had been playing around with a laser.

I am an aurora photographer, and this is no aurora. Who took this photo? I would like to get in contact with the photographer.

Interesting shot, and I'm fascinated with how you managed to do it.

You may have answered this already in the comment threads, but I'll ask anyway - What caused the concentric halos around the center of the star?

And as a material science grad - Is your laser rig from off the shelf parts, and about how much did it cost...?

Thanks very much! I am not entirely sure what caused the faint rings to appear. If I had to guess, I would say it was probably atmospheric thermoclines. As the laser light passed through different layers of high pressure, moist air, and low pressure, dry air, varying levels of laser light were scattered from the beam. Just a guess though, could also just be a lens effect...

I bought my IR, C-Mount Diodes from eBay. The ND:YAG resonator I was able to purchase from a site called O-Like. They sell completed modules, but I wanted to build my own. You can also buy driver circuits, and lenses from O-Like. I made my first driver circuit, but O-Like's drivers are better... If I recall correctly, this one cost me a little less than $300 to build, but the price of c-mount diodes has gone down significantly since I made this one! Let my know if you decide to build one! Laser Forums [link] has a lot of info from fanatic buyers, and builders; so what ever you decide to do, lots of good advice to be found there! (If you can handle all the Star-Wars talk... )

Yup! It's a laser!! I made it using an 2W, 808nm IR C-Mount diode, and a ND:YTP resonator to get the 532nm Frequency. I really wanted to show DA, but I also wanted to attempt to be artistic!

id say laser on the lens but knowing DSLR lenses ti would make a much more patterned shape ... i honestly dont know but its trippy XD

BlackGryph0n In reply to BiOzZ [2010-12-09 02:34:31 +0000 UTC]

Very close!! It is a laser, but it is not pointed at the lens. I set my camera on bulb, and then walked around the camera with the laser pointed upwards as the shutter was open. Thanks for your comment and interest!

BiOzZ In reply to BlackGryph0n [2010-12-09 04:43:02 +0000 UTC]

ohhh nice!
im guessing for such deep lines with a DSLR on bulb the laser must have been well over 100mW? or a foggy night? XD

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

BlackGryph0n In reply to BiOzZ [2010-12-09 05:31:14 +0000 UTC]

Correct! I have measured it at just over 300mw! It is one of my ongoing projects. The hard part is finding good C-Mount IR Diodes! I have been through way to many of those trying to make an adequate driver! Even for a 300mw, 532nm laser, I find I need C-Mounts rated at 2w or higher!

I'm interested as to how you did this.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

BlackGryph0n In reply to sniBs [2010-12-05 08:05:54 +0000 UTC]

I made this shot as an experiment to test a laser I had been building! The laser uses an 808nm 2W C-mount diode to pump a NDYVO4 (neodymium-doped yttrium aluminum vanadate) crystal. The crystal resonates at a frequency of 532nm, turning IR into visible green light! I am using a flashlight body as the host for the diode, crystal, and a driver from a 200mw red laser by O-Like. The top converging lens is mounted to a threaded washer which, when twisted, allows for the lens to move up and down so I can manually change the convergence point. The result is an ultra powerful laser in the visible spectrum that can burn, melt, or cut almost anything!!

I got this shot by opening the shutter and pointing my laser straight above he camera lens. Then I walked around my camera with the laser on, and cosed the shutter when I was finished!

I hope I didn't ramble to much. I just get excited about my projects... Thank you so much for showing interest!!

Indeed!
If you really wanna know, I used a high powered laser I had built to make a ring in the sky. I set my camera on bulb, pointed the laser upward, and walked around the camera as the shutter was open.
(Of course, that story is just to ease your fear of the aliens that I photographed... )
