don't know if you'll see this here, but anyways:
if you're just doing a shot of the stars, you can do multiple exposures, align them, and then set the layers to 'lighten' in photoshop, and that will get rid of a good deal of the noise.
Context shots like this are a bit trickier... I'd suggest a wide angle lens stopped down to a mid-range aperture (4-5.6) and long exposure. You've probably heard of the "rule of 600" for max exposure times without star trails; remember with a 450D you'll need to multiply your focal length by the crop factor to get the right numbers.

That picture is amazing! I went to Zion in April and I really wish now that I could have seen the canyon at night. It must of been beautiful.

I say crisp image with artifacts over blur and low noise in these sort of cases. The devil is in the details for astrophotog I think haha. Do you use local contrast adjustments to get the extra fine color detail in the dust clouds or does it have more to do with an extremely clear sky and focal length?
