Description This new song my brother and I wrote was inspired by the night-hike during which this photo was taken... [link] I Shot this photo of the center of the Milky Way and Jupiter at Zion national park in Utah at around 11:30pm with a Canon EOS 450D (Exp:30sec, F:4.0, ISO:1600) I took several shots with different exposure times at a lower ISO setting to try and avoid high noise levels, but all of the shots longer than 30sec had a motion blur from the rotation of the earth. I eventually had to decide what my priorities were; Crisp image with artifacts, or blurry image with low noise levels.

is this quite photomanipulated ?
For the star colors i mean ,
how did you manage to capture the colors too ?

don't know if you'll see this here, but anyways:
if you're just doing a shot of the stars, you can do multiple exposures, align them, and then set the layers to 'lighten' in photoshop, and that will get rid of a good deal of the noise.
Context shots like this are a bit trickier... I'd suggest a wide angle lens stopped down to a mid-range aperture (4-5.6) and long exposure. You've probably heard of the "rule of 600" for max exposure times without star trails; remember with a 450D you'll need to multiply your focal length by the crop factor to get the right numbers.

I have to say that this photo the way it is with the various filters add interesting colors And I love the highlights in the stars the bright one definitively. I also like the way you made the red mountain desert peak as well it adds just enough in a different to the natural sky to make it stand out. Also listened to that you and your brother wrote in the link provided sounds a bit like Owl City as the closest I could relate it to, I say nice work.

Thanks! I did see that, only about a tenth as bright though. I love to use my camera to get the extra couple billion stars in that I can't see with my naked eye! I hope you get a chance to see the Milky Way like this some day! The two best places I have ever seen the stars was in Alaska at the top of a mountian during the winter, and on a ship in the middle of the pacific.

I say crisp image with artifacts over blur and low noise in these sort of cases. The devil is in the details for astrophotog I think haha. Do you use local contrast adjustments to get the extra fine color detail in the dust clouds or does it have more to do with an extremely clear sky and focal length?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

BlackGryph0n In reply to Thomas-Koidhis [2011-04-11 02:57:25 +0000 UTC]

I agree! Though I think it would have been better if I had a wider aperture lens... I did do a bit of post processing to help the colors out a bit, but not much. This turned out more colorful than most of my up north night photography... I assume it must have something to do with the warm, dry air. (Maybe lower pressure allows for better saturation of the colors/ less Rayleigh Scattering? )
Thanks for checking it out! You have some AMAZING work!

WOW.
It's a pity for the image noise... I've a Nikon D700 with an incredible low noise impact (also at 3200), but.... I don't know WHERE to shot amazing stars picture like yours!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

BlackGryph0n In reply to OrazioFlacco [2011-03-04 14:11:09 +0000 UTC]

Thanks mate!! Yeah, the noise level on my night shots is always frustrating... I usually pick noise over motion blur though. (If only the earth spun slower! )

I use to live in Alaska and the stars there were INCREDIBLE!! (Not to mention the Aurora Borealis! ) But I am now in Japan, and find my self facing a problem similar to yours... There is way to much city out here!

I would love to see a star pic from your camera though! (Or even one form mine with a large aperture lens!) I wish you the best of luck!

(Oh, here is a song my brother and I wrote that was inspired by this view... If you are interested... [link] )

OrazioFlacco In reply to BlackGryph0n [2011-03-04 14:32:36 +0000 UTC]

I've listened to that song, but... to be honest, I prefer rock, classical or jazz music
by the way, I can reach f/1.8 with my lenses, but I've to be there... Zion, Utah... I could imagine that's a great place also during the morning!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

BlackGryph0n In reply to OrazioFlacco [2011-03-04 14:57:32 +0000 UTC]

Haha! I do Rock and Jazz for a living, so it kinda got old for me... I still love the oldies though!!

My lens only goes out to f/4.0 Oh well, I don't do enough night photography to by a new lens anyway...
You will LOVE Zion!! You have to go!! Have you ever been to the grand canyon?
BTW, you are absolutly right, the day and the night are a photographers paradise out there!! (This isn't the best shot, but it's Zion in the day... [link] )
