Description

Hey guys i just started vacation and im planing on some other things to post as well like reference arts and even some pinups as well, so be prepared. This particular art work came about due my dear friend  menpia who wanted to know how the IRA was armed in my comic for his birthday. This is part one of two concept art works.  www.deviantart.com/menapia

With the supply and military aid deals between the Dail and the Caugax council. The Irish Republican Army got a serious upgrade from there days of trench coats and shotguns. For the first time the IRA were able to take on army units with much more ease that the past with the training and supplies from the time started town. One of the first things they agreed on after the ammunition deal was uniform and firearms for the flying columns. The first flying  columns to be equipped with the new equipment was the 3th West Cork Brigade. Most of this equipment and uniform were  copies of easy to make yet proven equipment from surplus stores that could still hold a edge over the English army at the time . Most of the equipment was  made in the town

Here we se a new private of the 3th West Cork brigade. Here we see that he his dressed in a copy of the Type III OG-107 Utility uniform made with cotton sateen and with bottoms made from recycled plastic. the uniform style was used originally by the U.S army in the 1950s to the 60s.  His bandolier is also a copy of the very popular Chimcom Type 56 Chest Rig made larger to fit the longer .303 British ammunition and waterproofed with wax. His boots are actually a copy of what the modern Irish army uses in the 21th century, black Gore-Tex lined all-leather waterproof boots. His patrol cap is a copy of the M1951 Field Cap made with cotton poplin waterproofed with wax. He is armed with a CN Lee Enfield MK 1 rifle a simplified copy of the Mklll Lee Enfield a rifle that was standard issed during the war.

(A) Copy of Mil-Tec Parka Dubon with Hood waterproofed with wax, the parkas issued to the Army were typically made with a tightly-woven cotton poplin outer shell and would include detachable liners, became very poplar after the war with civilians.

(B) M1 style helmet, this copy of the American M1 helmet was poplar due to it enhanced protective capabilities due to added crest along the dome. It was called the Monterfrotino or Celt helmet do to it resemblance to the ones used by the Celts tribes, it was painted a lead free non reflective olive green paint.

(C) The ruck sack is a copy of the 5.11 Tactical RUSH 72 Rucking Backpack one of the best backpacks on the market in the 21th century. It was in use with the Irish armored forces of this time line until 2006. Plenty of surplus still exist in Ireland and abroad.

(D)  10 Round stripper clip for .303 British: This stripper clip was based off the one from the SKS rifle, but it was not popular with the troops due it it cumbersome nature. But the the ammunition it self war extremely poplar with the Irish due to the use of high quality smokeless powder, noncorrosive primers, waterproofing sealant on the bullets and primers and the vacuum seal packaging. They were two types of .303 cartridges issued a copy of Canadian .303 Epps cartridge and the regular .303 British. The deference between the two was that the epps had increase the shoulder angle to 35 degrees from 16 and decreased the body taper by over 50 thou. The resulting improved cartridge showed a 15 % velocity enhancement over the standard 303 British when fired from the P-14 or CN Boer MK1. But this cartridge was never issued to the regular infantry soldier but for sharpshooter that had the P-14 or CN Boer MK1 our any other Mauser action rifle in .303. It was never to be used in the Lee Enfield rifles as it was not as strong as the Mauser type rifle.  The epps was the more rare ammunition issued as it was only for Mauser types or sometimes light machine guns. The Caugax made ammo was so popular it was sometimes used by RIC and the Auxies over there standard issued ammunition because it fared better in the rain and lasted longer.
