Description Again, from the Abhorsen trilogy. This time my take on Sabriel and Touchstone in the reservoir, or indeed in any place where they are required to kick arse. Excuse the large lumps behind them - they are meant to be charter stones.

Not happy with the colouring nearer the bottom, but I couldn't chop it off because Touchstone's sword is down there (I gave him daggers, I always pictured them as two daggers, even though they're described as swords)

It is a bit dark, I know.

Sabriel, Touchstone and the Abhorsen trilogy are (c) Garth Nix

Oookay... (deep breath), here I go. Once again, warning that I'm not a pro or anything so my critique is based purely on the few things I learned from an art course I had long time ago and personal experience.

That said, let's start with the awesome lighting. You're really good at it, and it's becoming part of your style, go you! I especially like the symbols shining on their swords, very impressive.

You also improved the nose line of your characters, congrats! Clothing, acessories, weaponry, they all look good and match your drawing style pretty well.

The only thing to point out would be the rocks at the background, but you have already apologized for them e.deviantart.net/emoticons/x/xā€¦ " width="15" height="15" alt="" title="XD"/> Anyways, if you allow me a suggestion, try a different texture for the rocks, or maybe combine two or three layers of different textures with low oppacity (if you're working on Photoshop, that is). Add some more cracks and give the borders the same lighting effect you're using on the characters, only a little less bright.

Overall, it's a lovely work and you did visibly improve your art. Congratulations and keep it up! e.deviantart.net/emoticons/c/cā€¦ " width="20" height="20" alt="" title="Clap"/>

Thank you very much, always nice to know that I'm not overdoing the lighting, which I think I come dangerously close to on occasion XD And also good to hear the noses are looking good, since I am working on that And I'm really glad you can see some sort of coherent style in it, I think that's something I need someone else to tell me because I can never convince myself of what my style is!

Ah, the rocks. Yes, they are quite plain. I had intended to fade them into the background more, but as they're in the foreground they just look like cardboard cut outs XD Next time, I'll try and be more adventurous with textures and so one ^^ Thanks for the advice!

Glad I could help

Haha, I guess it's difficult for an artist to "see" their own style. I myself find it hard to notice anything in my drawings that one could identify as "part of my style"...

I'm going through your stuff again because you have all this awesome fanart for all my favorites (Abhorsen, Icemark, HP, Discworld...) and I've actually caught up on them all (except for Icemark) and I just had to say- isn't this scene great? It makes you feel that the ending isn't a 'surprise, they're in love'.

Aw, thank you I agree, and it made Kerrigor seem more important to have the story end with him, rather than have the story end when they fall in love - if you know what I mean I hate it when a story seems to build up to that point rather than the ACTUAL climax of the story.

Well, the reservoir is meant to be dark. Good job!

Thanks My laptop makes everything look a bit weird, so what seemed "dark and mysterious" a moment ago seems "a square of featureless black" when you look at it again XD

Yeah, I hate computer problems. The internet can be infuriating, sometimes it has to be restarted 4 times a day, so I can't be on as often.

Nngh this is awesome. Supposedly-dubious coloring and all. I wish I could color at all, much less the way you do light.

Ohh myy, this Abhorsen art is making me itch to read the books again. I loved them SO MUCH.
Love how you drew Touchstone!

I loved them too, and they never seem to deteriorate (unlike some books I fondly remember only to find an unpleasant and badly-written surprise within) - Garth Nix is such an original writer!

Thanks, I used to laugh when she first finds him and there's this sudden description of how muscular and good looking he is XD

This really made me think of the scene in Tales of the dark Forrest ( I can't remember which one) where Rose and... the boy... have ot to go through a scary cave :L Not sure why.

Eeee I really love the shiny yellow on their faces, and the expressions are so great.

Thanks, glad you like the light - I like to put glowing things in somewhere XD Anywhere. Everywhere. I don't think I've heard of that, is it a book?

BudgieFace In reply to BlackMage339 [2011-02-11 18:51:52 +0000 UTC]

Indeed it is It's verrrrrry verry silly. One of the main characters (in the other books) is a lemming called Cliff.

Sleyf [2011-02-10 09:30:26 +0000 UTC]

Aw wow brilliant! I think the lighting is just right, it's not too bright to be overpowering, but enough of a glow to be adequate. And Touchstone another one for my man collection! You spoil me!

BlackMage339 In reply to Sleyf [2011-02-11 18:04:09 +0000 UTC]

Thanks, it was a pain trying to get the balance right - my laptop always shows things lighter and brighter than they really are. See, if only you hadn't gotten bored you too would have been subjected to Touchstone's loveliness! XD I feel like you're stealing all my boys XD

Sleyf In reply to BlackMage339 [2011-02-12 09:52:40 +0000 UTC]

you're not the only one, my laptop does the same, and my mac saturates and darkens too much, so I can't figure out which is right! Why can't all resolutions be the same???
hahah I have a habit of flicking through pages and reading bits about characters I like my dear So I sort of...read small bits about him (but can't remember them!) He was a figurehead on a ship though right?
Hahah *pushes you out of the way and steals them all* you need to protect them in some way! Create a really ugly one and that'll put me off You'll have him at least!

šŸ‘: 0 ā©: 1

BlackMage339 In reply to Sleyf [2011-02-13 20:40:37 +0000 UTC]

Ah, yes, I have broken the spine of my copy of Sabriel from rereading a bit in the reservoir that makes me go "Awww..." and then make me put the book away if I'm on a train so I can read it in a cosy armchair somewhere XD Yeah, he was a figurehead - I always found that scene sort of funny XD

It's confusing, none of them are conventionally handsome, I don't know what I'm doing right XD

Sleyf In reply to BlackMage339 [2011-02-14 10:53:29 +0000 UTC]

I don't remember what happened, it was just one of those bad habit moments i have of skipping through the book and finding parts that sound intriguing...I ruin a lot of reading experiences by doing that!

I don't know, they're good looking I don't usually go for the conventional handsome type

Same XD I have a habit of opening a Terry Pratchett about 1/3 of the way through, reading a sentence and then waiting for read it again when it makes sense - I don't know why I do that.

Then you're much the same as me then XD apparently, as my drawings seem to say.

I told my sister to smack me if I ever do that again (I once spoiled the ending of a story by reading through it like that) The thing is...I don't know how she could smack me when she's nowhere near me when I read...it was a stupid thing to say! (I did it again with the last book I was reading anyway) when I have a character I like, I just have to find out what happens to them! And I thought he'd died! I had to find out if I was widowed (I've been widowed a lot of times...the guys I like always end up dead!)

Hehehe yes you have good taste

šŸ‘: 0 ā©: 1

BlackMage339 In reply to Sleyf [2011-02-15 19:32:21 +0000 UTC]

I know, my fandom of a character is like their Kiss of Death XD Inevitably they end up horrifically injured or dead or otherwise wishing they were! Only once did he have a happy ending, but it wasn't even that happy. In fact...no, it was crap, just like everyone else's XD

šŸ‘: 0 ā©: 1

Sleyf In reply to BlackMage339 [2011-02-16 10:50:22 +0000 UTC]

we must have that "Doomed love" syndrome, next thing you know, characters will be running away from us "No I promise this time you'll liiiivvee!" we'll just have to get used to being widows, or else have cripples/mentally traumatised lovers. The last character I liked (Gabriel Swift from "The Ressorectionist") ended up addicted to Opium and murdering people to sell bodies to anatomists...then he got his head bashed in with a shovel by one of his cronies...(I thought he was dead noooo) but he wasn't...it was a bitter sweet ending that really didn't satisfy me at all! The character before that was a mean bastard called Zophiel who ended up stabbed nooooooo! I won't mention the rest who died in various ways...

I <3 Zombie Lovers XD If I knew how to make stamps I would be making that one right now. Even though it sounds quite...sick. I do have one saving grace though, my favorite guardsman from Discworld (aside from Vimes and Nobby) is Reg Shoe - who can't POSSIBLY die, so I think he's quite safe XD

Ewwwie...pieces may fall off from time to time...and how could you disguise the smell? (although honestly if something is undead I don't believe it smells as it's body is still...working...if that makes sense?)
Hahaha I always liked Vimes the best, I never had an opinion on Reg really
