Description Well she's finally here. I present Rainbow Dash from My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic.

She is made from Fimo sculpting clay and stands 4in tall.
She is a solid piece, made from scratch and painted with acrylics.

It took a lot of work, especially painting all those colors for the mane and tail, but I'm pretty happy with the results.

I apologize for the glare, but my lighting is not so great and when I remove the source of the glare it ends up being too dark.

She is a commission for

Thanks for looking and any and all comments and/or questions are welcome.

How can you keep the coat smooth? I use super clay and they look like Granny Smith :/

is fimo clay easy to sculpt, because im hoping to make a rainbow dash sculpture like yours. also when you bought the clay was it in colour or not, or did you just paint it all afterwards? sorry for all the questions but it would be great if you could answer them.

The Fimo Clay is pretty firm. You'll need to really work with it to soften it up. There are fimo colors, but I buy a flesh-colored version called 'puppen' and paint it with acrylics afterwards. I've never liked the results from colored clays, but it depends on what you're looking for.

If you have any more questions, I'd be happy to answer them.

Also when you bake them which way round do you put it? Because once I made a sculpture and when it finished baking there was a large slit in it...

Blackout-Comix In reply to Aithusa308 [2013-07-06 23:35:01 +0000 UTC]

The large slit sounds like a crack. When you bake the sculpt too hot or too long it can do this. The other thing that can cause this is when the clay is too thick. If the clay is more than an inch thick, then you should consider bulking out the inside to make the clay thinner.

She looks absolutely dazzling, but how did you sculpt her mane? I've (Attempted) to do a Rainbow Dash and the way her mane looks bugs me to no avail.

Blackout-Comix In reply to TripleRainbowDash [2012-09-23 20:12:26 +0000 UTC]

I did it in two parts and attached them together. I also use a rebakeable polymer clay that I can close up the seems with. I got a large lump of clay and shaped it roughly into the shape I wanted and then plonked it onto her head. I then shaped it with needles and my hands. After I baked it I shaped it further using an X-acto knife and sandpaper 220 grit. Hope that helps. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask.

Thanks! If you wouldn't mind me asking, what kind of wire do you use for your armatures (Assuming you use them)? Maybe it's my brand of wire, but I end up reposing the limbs about ten times before they're able to stand on their own. I can't get over how smooth she looks, either.

Blackout-Comix In reply to TripleRainbowDash [2012-09-23 22:33:49 +0000 UTC]

I usually don't use wire for my figures. I have just started using wire for my next figure. Before, I didn't have any armatures at all. The wire I'm using for her is a green hard plastic coated steel wire. If you use a coated wire, I recommend running it through a bake cycle first to see if the coat holds up, because some coats melt at the baking temp. I like coated wire better because it holds onto the clay better than non-coated wire does. The strength of the wire is up to you. Work with whats comfortable, but strong enough to hold it's position. I get her so smooth thanks to sand paper. I use a 220 grit sandpaper and now I use a 320grit after using the 220 grit. It works wonders.

SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY! No seriously, I always talk about wanting a full figurine set of the mane 6, and I wish they would just start mass producing some of these. I don't want the crappy looking toys because they hair just annoys me. I want a set like this, where the characters look normal. I really wish they would come out with some.

I m new to sculpting and wanted to make my own pony (or at least practice. Did you use a wire frame for this? Besides that she looks amazing!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Blackout-Comix In reply to Xantchawalker [2012-06-01 16:33:52 +0000 UTC]

I never use wire in my sculpts. The only thing I use besides clay is pieces of toothpics to add stability to the tails. That's it.

Thanks.

If I may ask, how did you do the cutie mark?

Blackout-Comix In reply to thegypsybeaner [2012-05-29 03:39:37 +0000 UTC]

I use Master's Touch Acrylics and fine tip brushes. I dilute the paint and paint several layers allowing 15min inbetween each layer. Hope that helps.

Oh my! This is wonderful! or should I say awesome XD considering that's Rainbow Dash~ May i ask how did you get such a smooth finish with acrylics? it's simply stunning! >v< when I paint my ponies the paint always shows the brush strokes and looks terrible @w@

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Blackout-Comix In reply to ChickChicky [2012-03-30 12:07:28 +0000 UTC]

The trick to get a smooth paint job with acrylics is to dilute your acrylics. Use as few brush strokes as possible to cover. Don't try to cover it in a coat or two, it usually takes about 4 at the right dilution. Wait at least 10-15min in-between coats for the paint to dry. Finally you should invest in some decent paint and brushes. Hope that helps.

I use several coats letting it dry in-between. After that, not really. It's dry to the touch.

one final questions, I'm soo sorry for bothering you, but most sculptures I ask ignore me when I ask what they use.

do you sand your sculptures, to get that really smooth look?

thanks soo much for taking the time to answer my questions
