One of my five character concept design for my Conceptual Illustration class' final project. Ella Quiseleva and the rest aren't 100% completed yet sadly, but as if by stroke of luck my lecturer extended the deadline for us to complete 'em to another two weeks -yay! @.@;The character design is so......random. I originally intended the guy to be a hot long-haired bishonen but......ended up making him look like a younger version of Saito Hajime from the anime/manga "Rurouni Kenshin", in his prime as a Shinsengumi captain, instead
You can notice the similarities of his bangs (and his somewhat cold features) I might refine this a bit, perhaps -if I've the time. Since his attire is rather rushily coloured.

as for the person drawing the blade, it is not needless to say, I have drawn my katana both ways, this picture image you made, he is cautiously guiding the blade with his thumb ..so he is appearing to need to make a critical hit as to why he chose to... the blade can be drawn also face forward ... so I would not worry and again, you are painting to scene ..it is the viewers job to see and understand... not tell the artist how to make according to ones' perceptions / opinion...but to interpret a story they have on canvas/paper/what-have-you to share.

Very cool; love the entire outfit (especially since I hate drawing wrinkles)
Unfortunately, I believe that the blade is being drawn the wrong way
little known fact; USUALLY the sword is held blade edge up, so that the sword does not cut through the saya -sheath- (though for quick-draw one would press the edge up against the top of the saya, sometimes resulting in a lost hand)
