This was done for a Portfolio that I was invited to participate in: Music in Fur Minor Portfolio

My song chozen is "The Last Unicorn" written by Jimmy Web.

I will be posting the Movie versions of the song by "America", but for now I only have the versions by Kenny Loggins & "In the Mood; feat. Juilette".

You can download the MP3s here: [link]

The Original Sketch of this is found here: [link]

I used the French Unicorn Tapestries as my inspiration and refrence. But, the main subject must be an anthro. That's why it's an Anthro'.

The song mensions a lion and a fountain. So, you can see I included them from the tapestry.

If you want to look up the original refrences you can search for "Unicorn Tapestries" on Google.com There really isn't much photos available other than the Metropolitan Museum site.

******************
NOTES:

The Initials:
In the Original version of the Unicorn tapestries there are anicials in the tapestry, some say they are clues of the artist/designer, others say it's about marriage, and the names of those whome were to be wed... however, it's all speculation since know one actually knows for sure.

I do actually have my Original Signature hidden inside the bushes, but I desided that my typical signature wouldn't fit. I generally do my signature really big as a a mark of who I am. Like John Hancock (If you don't know USA History he was the man who signed the Decloration of Independance and the Bill of Rights REALLY BIG, on July 4th 1776, specificly to be noticed and vex the King of England).
So, since I wanted to keep with the theme of the tapestry, I put my initials in the composition.

KKZ stand for my real name: Kandice Kathleen Zimbleman
So, please understand that. I don't want to have any teasing about it, I've heard it all before. I'm not a racist, so don't make any rarcist jokes like "well if you last name started with..." or the one about "KZ" in Germany. YOU ARE NOT FUNNY. It's not original, and I've heard it all before. So, keep it to yourself.

Mixed Media:
I did the color version on Charcoal paper with graphic markers for the base colors, then the highlights were done in Color pastels and white charcoal. Altho' I have done some shading with the pastels also.

I wanted to let the paper color show through as much as I could. I wanted it to have that warm old yellowed look to it, even tho' it's brand new.

Plants:
I didn't put nearly as many variety of plants as in the original tapestry.
However, i did include the Clover which really stands out to me in the tapestry. I kept the rises, but I did a different version of them. I redid the feild greens, and eddited the bushes.

The Lion:
I only included the male lion, and omitted the female.
Since the paper is small, I can't really have too many things in the peice. I knew I would be working with pastels, and you can;t really use pastels very well when you work small. They have blunt tips, and the trick with pastels is to make things blurry. If I had works with bigger paper, I definately would have no problem including more things, but, then I wouldn't be able to scan it. I'm not working all that time and energy into something then have to play with scanning it and the frustration of trying to line it up only making it worse. NO WAY!

Birds:
To even out the comosition I kept 3 birds in the peice.
You can see both a male and female pheasent.
You can also see what looks like a sand piper... at least it looks like one to me... not really sure what it is... but, for arguement sake, it's a sand piper!

The Fountain:
I really changed the fountain allot. I still kept it "a little bit off", but the one in the tapestry is rendered without any real sence of depth or structure. In the ancient tiems people had no schooling in perspective like we do today and figures and furnature was often done without regaurd for structure, since they had no concept of it. That's just how they did it.
My ego really had issues with this, because I want things to fit together. So, I wnet 1/2 and 1/2 with it.
I really simplified the fountain allot. I had to squish it to fit, and I really could have all that detail on it. There's just no way it could fit on such a small peice.

The Unicorn Maiden:
I know it's a kind of boring pose. It's profile, but that's just how they did it in this style of art, from this time period. I exagerated the arms, because I still wanted some kind of depth in it... it's not exactly forshortening... but that's just me inserting myself in the picture.
I felt that a tail wouldn't fit with it, so I omitted it.
I really wanted to keep the composition as minimal as I possibly could.
In case you didn't know, 1 of the miricale abilities that unicorns do is purify things, such as water. they can detoxify poisons, purify water, cure illness, and the list goes on...
In case you haven't noticed, the mane on the unicorn is nothing like the original unicorn in the tapestry. I had to throw in my style somewhere... so since I'm know for the way I draw hair, I threw that in. It adds more movement and depth to the picture whcih is more or less flat.
Another obvious thing about the unicorn is that it's an anthro, plus it's female. The original unicorn in the tapestry was a male unicorn with a beard. No beards here.
Also, the Unicorn is supposed to be bemused by a Maiden/Virgin. That is the only way to catch a unicorn.

Thank you! My original song choice was "Old McDonald had a Farm" but the art director told me she had 'Last unicorn" in mind.

Oh, it's BEAUTIFUL! I'm very impressed with the compostion, and the "warm" look. Honestly, digital art is lovely, but traditional mediums will always be my favorite, there's a certain charm to it that digital art will NEVER have.

Its beautiful and the colours lyrical but her lack of a ribcage jars with me - that her neck and body appear the same diameter makes her seem... unbalanced, even more so than Msseur P. S Beagle (kowtows to his name)'s description of her neck being long and so making her head appear smaller than it was.
Beautiful job on the letters and knotwork - I think if makes the overall image feel more medieval.

I got to see the five senses tapestries while in Paris (my main reason for visiting) - the hunt is a definate must for when i next get to the states.
Sighs - wish I had know about the 'folio - would have liked to try a submission but then there are so many songs and only so much paint in the world.

NO, the tapestries are in the Metropolitan Museum, in the Cloisters, in New York City. I know they came from France, but, they are still in NY, and some are being restored so you can't see them all. The weavings look eactly the same on the back, only in reverse.
You must've confused them with some other famous Unicorn tapestries in Europe.
I only saw 2 on display in 2002 (january) because they were restroing/cleaning them. That was the year after September 11th, and I was married not far from Ground 0. We also went to the museum the week we were there.

Anyways, they didn't use perspctive or structure to make thier art/weavings at that time period. I gave my fountain a bit more perspective that the original. MOstly, I kept it stylized how they did, but also took liberties with the film variation of the tapestries.

I must have miss worded something in my post - I know the 'Hunt of the Unicorn' series is in NY - it is the Cluny museum in Paris that has the 'Lady and the Unicorn' tapestries (depicting the five senses plus one, the symbolism of which is debated) - and those I've seen (across the road from them is a wall with a huge tile mosaic with details of the tapestry - a monkey, flowers, similar.

I'll have to keep in mind to get in touch with the museum before I'm next in the states and find out if and when they're on display - it'd be unpleasant to go to NY for the sole purpose of seeing them only to find they weren't available for viewing -_- And that would be my only reason to go to NY (apart from the other museums and perhaps the carousel in Central Park)

The Metropolitan is 1 of the best Art museums I've ever been to! They have real paintings by Rembrandt, and actual drawings by Degas! OMG! Real Degas drawings!!!!! I wanted to cry when I saw them!!!!!
Philadelphia also has an excellent Museum whcih is famous for it's long staircase in the front which Silvestor Stalone ran up in his film "Rocky". That Muuseum has several rooms just of Duchamp's work! -and allot of Picasso works, even his non-abstract works.

The Hunt of The Uniconr Tapestries has it's own Fan website from the Metropolitan Musem. You should check it out!

You'd like New York. It's 1 of the best Cities in the United States. I've been there many times, and there is so much to do and see there. And, it's also not far from Philadelphia. Philadelphia is still my #1 favorite city, but NY is also a favorite of mine.
Washington D.C. is full of great things as well, and all teh Museums there are free, but that City is very dangerous and dirty. Only the Historical sections, and Captitol areas are nice. BUt, you could easilly spend an entire week there and have things to do. But, their Chinatown is terrible.

But, LA is also a great City. But, it's different kinds of Art, You'd need to go to Beverly Hills to find some really good art. It's the only place I'd ever seen that you could actually buy Renior or Picasso paintings in a store.

Ha ha... yeah ^^ I have my own little "fan club" that keeps begging me to draw new artwork or revamp my own characters. My last piece I gave in and redid an old gryphon ^_^ Hee hee... I'm not bothered by it though. I like chatting with people And thank you for the compliment, I am honored ^_^ I've always been so amazed by your artwork!

I'm sorry to hear that I hope I at least get to see you at AC next year. It would be fun to do a sketchbook trade.

It doesn't bother me that people like me or want my attention, but when it gets out of control and I can't get regular things done, it's really a problem. And, people get so bedazzled with the idea of who ya are, that they can't seem to "get" the concept of respecting people's privacy, or personal time. I find I'm so reluctant about how to deal with it, that I've hidden my E-mail address. No matter how polite I am, people just don't want to hear that you have a life. *sigh*

I only like chatting sometimes... when I was a teenager, or in college, it was nice. But, more and more I find it to be as annoying chatter, like noise, that distracts me from my goals and things. there's only a few persons I'd actually actively WANT to chat with, and those folks have generally no interest in either: A) Chatting with me, or B) Chatting at all, in general....

All the more to cause me more reluctance....

cybre In reply to BlackUniGryphon [2005-09-27 17:09:59 +0000 UTC]

I don't think I've ever had that much of a problem. I do get a good few emails and notes, but I try to make time for them. I tell people from the beginning that I do not have too much Internet time and cannot respond too quickly. They seem to understand. As I have been getting more watchers, however, I am finding it much more difficult to reply. I may have to curb answering every comment after a while and just reply to direct questions. I just don't want it to come to that. The community is what I enjoy best about DA.

By "chatting" I mean replying through forums and email. I do not get anywhere near an IM Messanger or ANYTHING of the sort! I agree, in college it was fun, but now I simly do not have the time to spend. That, it got to the point where I couldn't keep it under control. It is such a pain to try and talk to 5+ people at a time! Forums are nice because they are slow paced and you can do other things while you "chat".

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

BlackUniGryphon In reply to cybre [2005-09-29 02:43:33 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, forums are nice. I sometimes pop into the Gryphon Guild. But, generally I don't like chatting much.

I like the Comunities like DA or SA. That way I can respond to people on a more personal level. BUt, chatting is really getting on my nerves, because I want it only on my terms and on my time... but when ya use AOL everyone knows when you're on and there's no invisible setting on that... only the AIM client has it... it stinx. I like the Yahoo messenger because you can get your E-mail notifacatons the moment you get new mail.

But, recently, people are finding my E-mail address. I don't like everyone knowing my real E-mail address. I have 2. 1 for my personal use, and the other for business or spam or whatver...
