I sometimes observe the two of them
Or one, and then the other
I recall glances unsent
The subtle, choreographed ignorance
All feigned, mind you
(And your manners!
Don’t stare!)

Forget me not, I say
Forget to forget me, right?
What I once was, only I wasn’t
Except to me
But no matter
She’s got skin like the movies
And facades to match
(That dress has to coordinate
With the color of fear)

But looking at him
I wonder when the whole thing will clash
He doesn’t see the colors
He’s got no eyes
Not real ones, to be sure
The ubiquitous bad-boy
White Anglo-Saxon Persecution, to be sure
No hesitation, just preparation
The stuff of day-nightmares
(The goods ones that make you shiver
To be sure, oh-so-sure)

So I watch this interchange
Day after die-long day
Knowing full well
That legs are never too long
To follow all the way
To their inevitable conclusion
Sprawled not in the back seat of a car
But in the dirt of a roadside gulley
Where that car may very well have stopped
Oh horrors! Their “eyes” meet
Furtive passion without thought
(Places everyone!
We’re going to have a little improvisation!)

Daddy’s little showcase
The high-school bombshell
To end all Hollywoods, even his
She’s watching him, and he knows
Remember how I said that he has no eyes?
I wasn’t kidding
He hears with hidden ears
And does the rest with his mind
But he has no real eyes,
Baby blue as they may be
(Make the collision happen fast
We must have hopelessness!)

She can’t deny that
She likes boys like him
The bad kind
Boys with long hair
Because that ought to make a difference
Right?
He’ll take what he can devour
(It makes sense
And, occasionally, headlines)

What she doesn’t know
Can’t let her go on living
What she doesn’t know
Just me and him
Boys with long hair
Too little
Too late
Too bad
