Indeed! I didn't think too hard about its propulsion, but I imagine that it could actually be kitted out to have an Orion-drive if necessary.

space warships propelled by huge atomic farts... would you believe it was a real project? x)

But what if we want to build a super space armada on a budget?

It's time to look for some used ships to purchase then.

Hmm...not bad! But do you actually want a space armada?

Space explorers for the next millennium at least...spacecraft are expensive, after all, and it's a bit silly to destroy machines that one can learn from...

Not if those machines are firing on your own machines and your machines are made out of old and disused stations.

I love the design - it looks like something NASA could build, yet it still somehow retain agressive design of a warship.

I like the idea of a modular ship, something where you can outfit it with different pieces, make it bigger, or give it different variations.
Do the wings/fins here do anything specifically?

BlastWaves In reply to goeliath [2019-03-05 15:37:44 +0000 UTC]
I imagine the fins would be each some type of radar for tracking or detecting tiny objects like meteorites or incoming projectiles, whereas the main big dish on the upper section is for detecting and tracking larger objects like enemy vessels. I admit they're mostly just there to add some visual flair to the design, though.

Realistic space warships are different than from, say, Star Wars. In reality weight is a premium when it comes to putting something into orbit, for NASA it is $10,000 per pound. Then we get into modern weapons, which are extremely powerful when compared to WWII technology to the point where a ship's best armor is its point-defense weapons and electronic countermeasures.

I wouldn't expect a space warship to be exactly "put" into orbit - rather, it would make more sense to construct one in orbit from resources mined from asteroids and planetoids. And while armor wouldn't obviously do much good against a point-blank detonation of a nuclear missile, it would definitely be useful for a space warship which would likely encounter hypervelocity impactors and/or shrapnel just by travelling through a combat zone.

GunnyStacker In reply to Vumpalouska [2019-03-04 19:00:41 +0000 UTC]
Well, the construction of the ship in orbit was implied. It's quite clear that this is the case in the picture. As for armor, don't forget that the ships themselves need to be sufficiently light enough to accelerate and decelerate effectively without wasting large amounts of fuel. And 5" tungsten slugs moving at speeds we're talking about can punch through quite a lot to the point where we're talking about needing meters of armor to effectively stop said objects, even with modern materials and composites. And then you need to beef-up the supporting superstructure to ensure the even distribution of the kinetic force from the impactor across the ship so it doesn't break apart. But that costs a lot more in terms of resources and money, and the Type 44 here is a budget warship. Now some armor to deal with shrapnel and debris is feasible, but it takes a lot to stop a railgun. It'd honestly be better if the slug over-penetrated and then have the crew patch it up later. In this case, the ship would have to shunt its oxygen off into a series of multiple tanks to avoid catastrophic loss of atmosphere, and have the crew dawn space suits.
