Description I bought acrylic paints! Woohoo! Also, I'm sick. Not so great. But I finally painted this that I've been wanting to for some time. It's the thing that has traumatized so many Finnish and Swedish and possibly Japanese kids. Maybe even others. Ladies and gentlemen: MÖRKÖ! Or MÅRRAN! Or THE GROKE! Or something else, depending on your language.

She is a character in the Moomins, and she is very scary even to the people in Moominvalley. And the people in Moominvalley are barely scared of anything. She's actually not evil at all, she's just very lonely and she just wants a friend. The problem is that she is very, very, VERY cold. So cold that if she ever hugged anyone, they would freeze solid. Also, if she stands in one place for too long, the ground will be so dead that nothing can ever grow in it. It really doesn't help that she has very creepy empty eyes and that her only means of communication are wordless growls. I used to be terrified of her when I was little, and we never kept any Groke-episodes of the Moomins on tape for long. Also, everything with the name Mörkö was automatically scarier than it would normally be (and yes, "mörkö" is a fairly common way of referring to any kind of random slightly monstrous creature, such as the Boogeyman. The Boggart in Harry Potter was also mörkö in Finnish). Even now seeing her gives me shivers, even though nowadays I really like her. SHE'S JUST SO SAD! SHE'S FOREVER ALONE! I think she's sort of a personification of winter depression. Yes, winter depression is so common in Finland that someone (Tove Jansson, who is awesome) created a personification for it!

By the way, am I the only one who is concerned of her fingers? She's super cold and her fingers are black. Does that mean they're really frostbitten and about to fall off?

Painted with acrylics. The little creatures are done with markers and that's probably why I forgot their shadows. I'm stupid.

The Groke is the creation of Tove Jansson.

I'm not familiar with that character, but I'm glad there's a good potential friend for poor Groke.

I could feel pity for her (never knew it was a her), but I remember her screaming in an episode 'Milaan Palaan'?? Which means I will return??? I don't know the language so.

But if it really means that... Then I'd say she was like threatening the family And I'm sorry but thats never a good base of friendship

Blizzard-Tree In reply to T-b0 [2016-09-28 20:11:15 +0000 UTC]

She said "Minä palaan." and yes, it means "I will return." The reason why she was threatening them was that the Moomins were housing the two creatures (Tiuhti and Viuhti/Tofslan and Vifslan/Thingumy and Bob etc. depending on the language) who had stolen a very prized possession of hers (a ruby) and refused to let her confront them or get her ruby back at that time. Later they do manage to strike a deal with her and trade the ruby for a pretty seashell. But no, she never does make friends in the TV series. In the books she and Moomintroll do form a kind of strange but sweet friendship, though.

I remember them, AND A SUITCASE *.* That ruby must have been in there!!!!! Now it all makes sense..!!!!!

But with that being said, now I realize that those 'creatures' pulled of a very, VERY, DUMB move!!

I mean... Stealing from her?!?

Yup. They weren't being very smart. And yes, the ruby was in the suitcase.

Blizzard-Tree In reply to gameboyred [2015-01-22 12:58:23 +0000 UTC]

I used to really like that super whimsical music that sometimes played while the Moomins were having fun (like while they were swinging across a chasm on ropes). I also like the beautiful music with the lady singing wordlessly (I think it happened a lot when there were flowers blooming and stuff) and I do really like the super creepy ghost music even though it makes me really uncomfortable.

It is one of the scariest things in the show in my opinion as well, yeah. I personally think that the first appearance of the Groke was the scariest. That episode has such a great atmosphere.

Apparently I used to be a huge fan of the Groke when I was very young (like, one year old), but then I started to be afraid of her later. Now I like her again.

(Some episodes of the TV series are Jansson's book based on which appeared the groke, and I am not afraid of the groke when it is a mere cartoon figure. I do not belong to as child, of that and I'm not as child, I have followed the Moomins episodes seen again in this decade, I do not pretend, I may have been ..... ... different, but the in elemantry school I have watched Harry Potter and follow still and Playing a video game . Tove Jansson (9.8.1914-27.6.2001) was a Finnish people, like me, but her first language was Swedish, and I have to Finnish. Languages in Finland is more than Swedish languages in Finland, Finland's official languages are Finnish and Swedish. I heard some Moomins and it's a long story.)
