Description Hey, thanks for all the birthday-wishes! This is my way of saying "Thank You!" to ya'll: a wallpaper!

The hyperbasic idea behind this: chunks of ice, dust, and rocks are forming together to build a solid planet with geothermal activity (because, heck, flames dashing out of the crust generally make things look cool ).

So, I hope you like it! If you do, I'd be really happy if you dropped a . Little click for you, big boost of motivation for me

Enjoy!

Facts:
- Original Dimensions: 9402 x 4000 pixels (print resolution)
- Photoshop
- Wacom Intuos 3
- Working time: ~12h
- PSD filesize: ~720MB (guess I should've merged the texture-layers onto a single layer :p)

Edit (12 Oct, 2011):
Woah, holy smokebeans, a DD!
Thanks a lot for the feature, ^casperium ! And thanks to you guys who have dropped by a fav or a comment, I really appreciate them!

Moar edit! (18 Oct, 2011)
Upon popular demand, I took the liberty and uploaded the image in the most popular single-screen-ratios as well now (which are 4:3, 16:9, and 16:10), sufficiently large to fit. Enjoy!

Thanks a lot for your critique!

As for the nebula, it was my intention to give it some hard edges and to break the otherwise (in my opinion) boring flow between the planet and the star in the background

It's ok ^^ I think it's the first time I write a "real" critic. As for the "pointed clouds" it's just that their positions in the "center" of the picture kinda blocks the flow of our sight. Normally, an eye passes from one point to another in a picture, making a "path". I don't know if I explain myself correctly... would b easier in french! lol But anyway, it's still a reall amazing piece of art!

Overall

Vision

Originality

Technique

Impact

Great coloration to start with.

Originality: concept, not new, HOWEVER seeing the terraforming process occurring is new to me t least, and it is nice to see planet coming to life. It's gerat but a smentioned down in impact, some of the more striking parts of this get swamped by the vastness of the image. 4/5

Technique: I'll just say 5 because I feel it is awesome, and this is not the type of art that I make.

Impact: This is the first time in over 2 years that one of my own pictures hasn't been my home desk top. So impact is 5/5

On top of that, I think this may have finally dislodged my writers block for a novella I'm writing.

Vision: I like where you went with it, very good, must have taken some time, BUT the sheer scale of it makes some areas that have more impact than others get lost in the background.

Noldomire [2011-10-23 13:00:31 +0000 UTC]

Of course, you realize that terraforming is not about smashing rocks together to form a new planet, but rather about taking an existing planet and manipulating it (primarily its atmosphere) to create Earth-like conditions?

Also, if you smash a bunch of rocks in space, they don't immediately form a nice, spherical shape. The shape we see, when we think of a planet, is the result of millions of years of stuff colliding, eroding and gravitational effects.

Still, nice to see a new space cadet! Keep on the good work.

EmilLarsson In reply to Noldomire [2011-10-23 15:09:49 +0000 UTC]

Of course, you realize that he probably named this "Terraforming" because of a more artistic than scientific reason, since the word itself could describe general change of a celestial body. I am, and *BlPh is probably as well, aware of the true meaning of the word. Trying to correct a smaller term-error in a picture that was obviously meant as art, not science, is just foolish.

Also, even though he stated that a planet was formed, no where could be found a statement saying it would happen overnight. This knowledge is to be found in kids books, it's not rocket-science. ( No pun. )

Lastly, funny that you comment about the lack of sense in the picture and then say something this ignorant. If you would spend two seconds loading *BlPh 's gallery you would see that he is not new nor a bad space-artist.
Bitch, I'm a mage.
