Read Our Sister Series:  ....

And our brand new  series, !

Adam's Comments:
Given how horrific the Insomniac's situation is, I kinda felt like this needed to be said by someone and Protocol was the one to do it. She's not saying this because she's heartless, and she's not telling the kids to snap his neck right this second, but realistically this is something that might be worth discussing.

I really, really don't want Protocol to look like a monster by addressing the possibility. I think she's trying to look at it logically. In fact, I think the only reason she's bringing it up this early was because she knows it's entirely possible that's how the story is going to end and wants the kids to be emotionally prepared for it if it does happen. I re-wrote the last line in the comic just to make her sound as compassionate as I could without sugar coating it. Why she she doesn't use the word "Euthanize," it sounds too clinical (that and the kids might not all know what it means).

In general really dig Protocol in this page; she knows the kids didn't HAVE to inform her and she thanks them for doing so, and even compliments them for figuring this part of things out. I also love her reasoning for why she can't just magically fix it; to do this safely it would require study and research.

Speaking of Protocol, love that first shot with her on the job, the city skyline behind her. I actually forgot to draw that background! Martin put in that and the one in the second panel when he was coloring.

Norepinephrine and melatonin are the neurotransmitters (brain chemicals) that control wakefulness and sleep respectively. That line was... kinda genuinely my best attempt at coming up with a physiological reason for what happened to him but it doesn't make any sense. Norepinephrine has a TON of functions in the brain besides just keeping you awake, and if McCay had an overabundance of it there'd be a lot more signs of it in his behavior. He certainly wouldn't be as stoic or calm as he was when fighting Marvelous Man in the Halloween chapter. As for melatonin, I've got a bottle of over-the-counter sleeping pills that use that as the main ingredient in my cabinet; if he wasn't producing enough of that it wouldn't really be an issue. Just a consequence of the writer not being smart enough to put words into the character's mouth.

Martin's Comments: Thanks to Adam for getting the shading on this one; I was very tired at the time we were doing it and while I did get it colored I kind of just wasn't up to stick around to do the rest. That's also why I'm so late commenting, kind of slipped my mind by the time I got up.

In general it did feel pretty important to have someone bring this up, and Protocol felt like a natural one to do so; it does take a certain cold logic to be willing to suggest that maybe suicide is the most ethical solution and Protocol does certainly fit for that, but do still hope that it's clear that she isn't saying this lightly and is not trying to dismiss the human element here in saying that.
