He had limited social interaction due to this but he did acquire friends through the internet and through the celebrations his family was invited in though none were close enough to deserve the title "best friend".
Just as well. He was taught that emotional attatchment should be avoided. But Li was naturally emotional and reactive. In order to fit standard, he tucked away this part of himself from public's eyes. Or tried to. He never held any ill will towards his family because he understood the significance in this practice.
