The Amatsura family is an established line of tea ceremony specialists, particularly in the art of sado (Way of the Tea). Following the principles governing its art, all members of the Amatsura household was raised to embrace a multitude of values including humility, simplicity, tradition, and spiritual satiation. Houseki, however, was an exception. He was always an exception.

Born the youngest of three (with 20 years on the next sibling) as well as being the only son, Houseki was a miracle child given his mother's advance age at the time of his birth. His old parents doted on him; his adult sisters babied him; and in the small sheltered community he grew up in, the coattails of his family's name was all that was needed to pass through his school years without major incident. Though the family wasn't particularly rich and their lifestyle was traditional and minimalistic, Houseki, the baby of the family, was given whatever he wanted: toys, clothes, gadgets, and even lessons and classes. Whatever he wanted, no matter how little, he received, and much more. This was what he expected from life and the people around him.

His social life consisted predominantly of two kinds of people: his family and his after-school tutors. His home life was strict and his days after school were full of lessons, not only in academics, but also in traditional arts such as calligraphy, poetry, and even flower arrangement. Having grown up in a household of adults, Houseki preferred the company of his elders to his peers. When he turned into a teenager, Houseki found himself attracted to one of his tutors: his eldest sister's friend, a lonely woman engaged to a surgeon who was hardly ever home. Days turned into weeks and ultimately into months as his schoolboy crush blossomed into a full-blown relationship.

Despite plans to get married when Houseki turned into an adult, their relationship ultimately ended when she chose her fiance over him. She needed a man, someone who could take care of himself and his family. Houseki couldn't offer her that. Embittered with rejection he had never known before, Houseki grew calloused and resentful towards the world that wouldn't give him what he wanted most. More than anything, Houseki grew to detest hearing about people's personal problems, which he deemed ridiculously trivial in comparison to his own. Even after experiencing a pain that tormented him in his sleep, Houseki chose to remain in contact with the woman who hurt him the most, clinging tightly to the distant hope that his love will one day be returned even as the years started rolling on and she became a mother herself.

In hopes to win her love again, Houseki decided to pursue Law instead of following the family tradition. He would become a man whose success was built with his own two hands. He applied to Kamenoko University as the first step to his ultimate goal: to become not only rich, successful, and powerful, but also to grow into a man his love won't turn away.

He is a confident but naive young man who has never experienced any real hardship or conflict growing up. Almost everything fell neatly on his lap, especially when he wanted it... At least until his first experience with love.

Growing up in a setting where no one had ever disciplined him has made it difficult for him to discern appropriate behavior from inappropriate behavior, especially in social contexts. He is a person of order and structure, but only when the rules are concrete enough to be universally accepted and could be studied. Houseki gets uneasy around unpredictable circumstances or spontaneous people, mostly because he knows he has a tendency to get swept up in emotionally charged situations. He prefers to avoid conflict altogether, but his inability to curtail his complaints or word his gripes more appropriately usually puts him right in the middle of conflicts. Although self-absorbed to begin with, rejection caused Houseki to grow obsessed with himself. Convinced that no one else could ever understand how he feels, Houseki harbors very little interest towards other people's personal problems. He's quick to put down people's troubles or brush them off, though this is mostly for the sake of avoiding his own unpleasant memories from creeping up than out of malice. He also has a complex about his youth and maturity.

Other than becoming oversensitive to anything even remotely embodying rejection or dismissal, Houseki's uncomplicated life as well as traditional family values has produced in him a childlike honesty and purity in his actions. What you see is what you get. Houseki wears his heart on his sleeve. Whether it's hate or love or just a good day, it shows on his face and his demeanor. He tends to be crabby since he likes to wallow in his misery on his spare time, but when good things happen, Houseki isn't above letting a smile find its way to his lips.
