This illustration was heavily inspired by the poem "The Old Astronomer" by Sarah Williams. It was published in Twilight Hours in 1868, the same year the author died. Perhaps you remember the phrase "Though my soul may set in darkness, it will rise in perfect light; I have loved the stars too truly to be fearful of the night. " Or more commonly "I have loved the stars too fondly to be fearful of the night"... well; now you know the author of the phrase.
